Magic questions

Thinking of venturing to Magic this weekend with my wife. Two questions:

1. How are the groomed options for intermediate skiers? My wife's a pretty decent skier, but she likes to take it easy on the groomed. Are there good options for her?

2. Any lodging recommendations nearby? Doesn't have to be right by the mountain...somewhere convenient to the NYC drive on either route might even be preferable.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yes, the lookers left or East side will have fantastic groomers. Wizard on the West side I would think as well. The skiing is the best it's been in years. You will not be dissapointed.

On mountain you basically have 2 options. The Inn @ Magic is really nice. Very updated will full bar, restaurant, etc. The Blue Gentian is probably a little cheaper but also nice. If looking for something off mountain & cheap, The Magic View Motel is another option. A few miles down the road is the Swiss Inn. I have not been in years but it has a great reputation. Fondue is supposedly great.

Basically the entire East side of the mountain is green and blue terrain . My mother and some of my cousins ski that side regularly and don't get bored. Jsut like the advanced and expert terrain, these trails also have some interesting fall line characteristics. Most of these trails are groomed each day with Vertigo and Mystery being the exception. On the West side there is Wizard which is also a nice run for an intermediate but some do get intimidated by the chute. Before she heads that way scout it out and decide if she is up to it.

As for lodging... are you looking for something upscale or something less expensive?

There are condos available for rent at Trailside. I'm not sure what the going rate is these days but I know there are at leat a couple of one bedrooms that are being rented regularly. Those on the ground floor have a deck, many of which you can ski in/ski out of. Most of the upstairs places ahve a firepalce. There is a lockerroom downstairs so you can still ski in/ski out.
While its not outlandish, the Inn at Magic Mountain has some very nice rooms and there were just redone in the last couple of years. it is about 100 yards to the basew lodge from there. A cheaper option is the Snowdon Inn which is down the road about 1/2 a mile. The rooms are nice and clean and I think it comes with a continental breakfast. I stayed there with my kids a few years back while I was doing work to our condo.

I've also heard that the magic View motel is pretty decent though that is jsut second hand information. A little further away is the Swiss Inn which I ahve ehard is also pretty decent qnd their food is very good.

All of these are to the West of Magic. If you decide to come from the East, there is the Motel in the Meadow which is about 10 miles away and there are some B&B type places in Chester.

There are also B&Bs around if that is what you are after.

Thanks for the input--sounds like there are plenty of options, and I'm really excited to check ou the mountain. We're looking for more upscale accommodations, preferably of the more modern variety than the more traditional/victorian-style B&B. Inn at Magic looks pretty nice...I'll check out the other suggestions as well.

We may ski one day at Magic and one day Killington, since we have some vouchers we might not otherwise use, so we're pretty flexible on our lodging location.

Thanks again!

The Inn is where you want to be. Very nice rooms, walk right to the lift, great bar, no driving, etc. If you want to spring for a couple Save Magic T-shirts ask Lisa the bartender in the lodge or have her point me out. Dale @ the Inn has a few as well. Spam i know, don't care.

Prediction: Ski Magic Saturday you'll be back for more Sunday. The mountain is skiing that well & the vibe is like nothing else this year.

X2 for the Inn at Magic Mountain. Stayed there earlier this year and would again. The bar/lounge area rocks and you can have dinner right there. I skied there on a Friday expecting to pack up and leave for somewhere else on Saturday but.................NOPE! Skied Magic again!

Thanks guys. I'm liking this plan. Maybe we'll save the Killington vouchers for a weekend in April. Magic two-day tickets are $80 on liftopia.com right now (only $35 for just Sunday). Looks like an awesome place, and being closed midweek is a plus for the weekend snow quality.

When I pulled in last Thursday night there was the biggest excavator I've ever seen in our driveway to remove the snow. I think there will still be plenty Beetlenut. Wait til you guys see the bumps on Magician.

VW bug-size I trust! I'm not worried about enough snow, I just want to get up there before it all gets packed down. This is the third time I've tried to get up there since last week! Gregg, can I get a Save Magic T in the lodge or Bar area?

I'm sold. Revised plan is two days at Magic for me, one day at Magic and one day at the Manchester Outlets for my wife.

Magic is extremely underrated for groomers. When Magic has good snow and a fresh groom, its east side is simply awesome. Even I enjoy ripping a grooming run over there every now and again. Not a ton of options but should be enough to keep someone busy for one day when you add in Wizard on the other side and perhaps Talisman if it has been groomed.

Skied Magic on Sunday. Man, that place is awesome. We did 3 trails, otherwise we were in the woods, which were outstanding. Steep, deep and just awesome for southern vermont. The 3 trails we skied were redline, black magic from the top and Magician. Otherwise, woods and more woods. If you keep going past Magician, you can just drop into those woods. Steep, deep and pretty tight and gnarly. Totally awesome.

I was there on Sunday and it was good but not great from a boarders perspective. Natural snow trails were all rutted up and hard, trees were certainly steep and deep but very tight, tough for me to string together more then 2 or 3 turns at a time.

Don't get me wrong I had a great time but I just read a report from yesterday (on NASIOC) that said all ungroomed trails were "almost frozen over, tough to get an edge in on the chopped stuff". I don't know what daytime temps are suppose to be like for Londonderry in the next few days but would be nervous that potential warm days and the high march sun combined with cold nights will make the natural trails harder and harder.

Oh and I was amazed at Magician, we came out of the woods about half way down, and I would say some of the moguls were closer to VW Bus size then Bug.
