New 75 mph limit puts Maine in the fast lane
...making Maine the only state east of the Mississippi River where drivers aren't breaking the law by driving 75 mph....The new 75 mph zone covers an approximately 110-mile stretch of road between Old Town, which is a few miles north of Bangor, and Houlton.... The new law authorizing the higher limit went on the books Wednesday, though it actually takes effect when new signs replace the old 65 mph ones next Tuesday...."People do pay attention to speed limits," said the institute's Anne Fleming, who warned that the new limit will just induce people who've been going 75 mph to push the pedal to the metal. "Whatever they're flying along at, whenever they raise the speed limit, they fly along faster." ***

Now if only Vermont would follow suit....

Too bad. That's a useless stretch for SR / Loaf / Back if you're coming from the south.

I hope those doing 75 enjoy their mileage dropping 5-10mpg. God forbid a moose wanders out into the road.

Wish more stated adopted that. And wish more people understood basic highway lane useage.

That's a pretty lonely stretch and people already drive 80+ there, now they will be closer to being legal ... You'll appreciate it if you are heading to Katahdin.

regarding MPG - 75 is the LIMIT. you are free to drive slower and save gas if that is your choice.

Steve...You have never gotten a ticket before
Nope. Got a few warnings. I've definitely deserved a ticket instead of a warning on at least two occasions when I was going 10+ the limit non-highway. I just am straight up with cops: "yes sir, I was going too fast and didn't realize it" which is almost always true as I usually keep it within +5. Um, er, I used to at least.... :-x

You never drive at 75? I find most people drive 75 in a 55 zone and 80+ in a 65....91 in VT should totally be 75...

Nope. Here's why - I drive for work in the range of 90-250 miles a day. This was fine when we received IRS rate at around $.50 until a few years ago. The mileage reimbursement was then changed to a consulting companies plan (Runzheimer Intl.) and in the end it was around $.38 per mile at best. Out of spite and economy I quit using the interstate and always drove 60mph or less. Within a week I was absolutely shocked at how thick air really is. If I'm not working, yes I typically drive 73 to 81 in a 65, generally to stay with everyone else. I get my personal kicks driving by doing 55 in a 55 zone when there's a corner marker that states 30. Twists are where the fun is for me, bike or car.

Slow down gramps, there might be a family of children playing just around that bend. Sheesh.

Bingo !!! I've used that SAME approach for yrs and have only one ticket to date over 35 yrs ago . Using this tactic i've gotten off the hook 3 times this summer :D

I afraid the ODDS will catch up soon , my only saving grace is i've done training sessions in leadership for MANY of the regions public offers including police and the college where i worked had a CJ program and a county wide Institute for regular in service training so many of these grads recognize the ole man when they see me . Give me a warning and sent me on my way .

But humbly admitting that "yes sir YOU are right , i was deep in thought/conversation and certainly NOT focused on what i was doing , last time i looked at my speedometer i was doing ( fill in the blanks).

Seriously this. This does not occur in England nearly as much. In fact, if you cruising along the middle lane with no-one around you, if someone comes up behind you are expected to move over. If you don't you'll get flashed until you do.

People sitting in a lane and not moving over really grinds my gears.
