Due to the distance between the major ski areas in both states and the lack of east-west highways in northern new england i doubt there are too many people that have skied enough in both states to make an accurate comparison.

But I still vote for maine, just because there are fewer yankees fans.

I went to college in Maine (an hour from Sugarloaf) and had the All East College Pass for 4 years. Now I live in Upstate NY and I've had the Gore/Whiteface pass for the last 5 years. Therefore, I feel pretty well qualified to make this call. And the correct answer is:

Maine.

I've only skiied Maine so I can't really comment. I'd like to try all of New York's offerings just because :-D. I assume the closer to the city I get the more I would have to deal with the likes of Victoria Gotti's kids on snowboards...and that's a reason to stay in Maine all by itself.... :uzi:

Interesting....the image shows the Sugarloafer as the one WITHOUT the face mask.. (shows the designer never skied the Loaf in January...)
Greg, this really tugs @my brain man.....I grew up in upper NYS (60s-early 70s) ....but the depressing family wasn't into doing things....thus, never tried skiing....never got up to experience the Adirondacks in Winter....and in Spring & Fall for that matter;-) Everytime I now continue on past Killington/Rutland into NYS I find myself in total awe of the Adirondacks. Absolutely love the peaks & valleys of NY, VT, & NH....but also love Maine for what it is.
Sugarloaf may be a 1+hr commute, but on the back road shortcuts there's no traffic whatsoever.

NY has WHiteface and some great BC ops, but the trifecta of 'Loaf, Saddleback and SR is tough to beat Maine's a little short on BC, but does have Katahdin.

Hands down, Maine
