Mammoth

I'm definitely kicking myself for trying to figure this out after already booking everything. Just wish I had another day or two. With the current plans, I would get 1.5 days max at Mammoth which is barely enough to scratch the surface there. Plus I'm dead set on getting my 2 week Jackson/Big Sky/Targhee trip done this year as I've been talking about it for 3 years now, so maybe I should just skip the skiing this time around.

Next year I will definitely consider booking a week long trip (probably in the spring) so I can spend 4-5 days at Mammoth and June and still be able to be in Vegas for a couple days. I need to get my poker days in lol. Maybe I'll still make the trip up to Eagle Point for a day, although I don't know if it's really worth lugging my stuff out there.

If I had Epic I would love to do a Heavenly trip and stay at a walking distance casino in Stateline. How much of a pain is it to get to Squaw from Stateline? Could do that with Ikon, although it wouldn't be as cool as playing cards all night, then getting up in the morning and walking over to the massive ski resort next door.

Mammoth is great. We loved it so much we would have considered moving if it was anywhere else than within California. Cannot comment on the drive, both times we went were late April and summer sessions, so other than Tioga almost not opening fully in time (summer session did Pallisades last weekend of June then did 3 days exploring Yosemite, so getting from there to Mammoth in 3 hours requires Tioga Pass) roads were clear. Went down from Reno both times. Most of that road is decent but there is a canyon section that I could see being really sketch in a major storm with low snow levels.

Feel the same way, we'd buy a place in Mammoth as well if it wasn't in California. Already live in one high tax state don't need another.

The mountain biking around Vegas is really good.

Vegas + hookers + blow = world class tho.

In all honesty, I’m not a gambler or have the $ for my previous math equation so I don’t get the place. The last time I spent a night there I thought it was an overpriced shit hole for gapers.

But, if you’re used to the tri-state region it’s probably sort of something you’re used to I guess.

The drive from Heavenly to Squaw is about an hour. The drive circles around Lake Tahoe for the most part and is some of the most beautiful scenery you'll ever be around.

Unless it’s the weekend. Then it’s kind of an urban meets the mountains sort of nightmare.

I used to go to Vegas every super bowl weekend for a lot of years, and always grabbed a day of skiing. If you don't want to lug all your shit out just bring boots, and rent the rest. It's not ideal, but works for a day. We never got to Mammoth, so can't comment on that, but have been to the other 3 day tripable ones. All are fun and worth a day, including Lee Canyon, if there's snow. It has some great side country terrain that was never on map, but a lot of it appears to be now. If it's just snow making terrain, don't bother.
Both Brianhead and Eagle Point are fun with plenty of terrain for a day. Brianhead is closer, and a bit larger, but Eagle Point is a real sleeper. We hit a pow day there, and there were about 50 cars in the lot. Epic. The road up was real sketch in snow, but we made it in a POS rental without 4 wheel drive, or chains. Barely. It's been a few years, but both had some cat accessed terrain. Not sure if that's still the case. Definitely get in a day if you don't go to Mammoth

Lee Canyon was where I learned to ski and where I skied most often growing up. It's a neat little place with some great scenery and some interesting terrain. It always reminds me of some of the smaller places in Vermont, except you could see real mountains and play video poker in the bar. Definitely worth a day. I also did some trips to Brian Head and Elk Meadows (which I'm just now learning is called Eagle Point). If the snow is good, you definitely can make a couple of good days skiing in Nevada / southern Utah.

Not sure I understand. CA is a high income and sales tax state. Due to Prop 13, it is a famously low property tax state, so your perceptions here are a little off base.

Well, it is hammering and n Europe after all this fall. All the Men's speed events were cancelled this weekend due to heavy snow.
