Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR Wheelset

ONECOL.jpg

Mavic scrutinized the Cosmic Carbone design plan and added one key element that makes the rims lighter yet more durable and improves braking performance in all conditions. This is all the result of Mavic's Exalith rim treatment, and you'll only find it on certain models like this Cosmic Carbone SLR Wheelset.
Exalith is what gives the braking surface of the SLR rims that sinister charcoal black color. It's so often spoken of with regards to its resistance to wear at the braking surface (which is true) that the other benefits go without recognition. Of course, the added hardness of the Exalith treatment allows Mavic to leave an aggressively machined braking surface. This drastically increases the braking performance, especially in wet weather. A tangential effect is that the harder rim is less prone to wear, therefore Mavic can make the rim sidewalls thinner, saving weight. With regards to toughness, the Exalith treatment allows the SLR rim to survive twice as long on Mavic's torture testing machine as a standard anodized rim before breakage occurs at the spoke nipple seats.
The carbon fiber spokes are just as impressive. If you go around the wheels and count, you'll come up with 20 front and rear spokes. There are actually 10 in each wheel, five on the left and five on the right. Each single spoke goes through the hub flange, from rim to rim. The design is stronger and lighter than terminating the carbon spokes ...with aesthetics that match the CC Ultimate Wheels, the SLR wheelset has a performance advantage in terms of braking thanks to Exalith... at the hub flange because it eliminates the inevitable interface between composite and metal. It's for this reason that Mavic's Rim 2 Rim system is also more aero. The net effect with the bladed spokes and low profile hub flanges is strikingly similar to their world-class Cosmic Carbon Ultimates. The one difference, and this is a critical one, is that the spokes on the Carbone SLR are true-able and replaceable. If you break a spoke, you can pull out the broken spoke, thread in the new one, and then true it up with the included spoke wrench.
Once you get past the unique flanges, the hubs are fairly traditional Mavic creations. The axles and the hub bodies are made from aluminum and sculpted for light weight. The Force Transfer System-Light (FTS-L) uses a lightweight aluminum freehub body that sits directly over a hub "nub" that boasts centrally-located pawls and stainless steel inserts for durability. The result is less flex, less friction, and faster engagement. The hubs spin on Mavic's top-end QRM+ bearings.
The carbon/aluminum hybrid aerodynamic rims are 52mm in depth and are laced to the hubs with 20 cross-two spokes front and rear. The wheelset includes Mavic tires as well. The GripLink front tire and PowerLink rear are optimized for their roles on either end of the bike. Both are pro-quality clinchers, at home on your race bike.
The Cosmic Carbone SLR Wheelset is available in clincher format only and comes as Campagnolo (ED10) or Shimano/SRAM (M10) compatible. You'll also get a bearing adjustment tool, spoke wrench, BR601 titanium-shafted quick releases, rim tape, wheel magnet, wheel bags, valve extender, user guide, and warranty card. The complete wheelset with tires weighs 2340 grams.
This wheelset is part of Mavic's MP3 extended warranty program. The acronym stands for Mavic Product Protection Plan, and it provides you with two years of almost unlimited no-fault protection from Mavic. More details can be found on the MP3 website. Please note that MP3 coverage must be purchased within 5 days of the date that you receive your wheels. You'll get an email from us the day after your online wheel purchase, containing the retailer and product codes that you'll need to register your wheels on the Mavic MP3 site. You'll also need the serial numbers that you'll find on your wheels. The cost for this coverage is approximately 8% of the retail cost of the wheels.
