I'm really thinking about getting something wider for next season, buying in the next few days of course. Currently, I'm skiing on a 06/07 K2 Apache Crossfire. I really like this ski. Carves beautifully, very stiff, very forgiving and zero chatter (and damp). Great for eastern hardpack at Blue and night skiing. Not so great in anything deeper than 3 inches or spring snow. I mostly only ski groomers, rarely hit the woods, avoid bumps like the plague. I pretty sure I'll be able to carve well on any of these when needed.

On my short list:
Nordica Top Fuel (78) - I demo'd this while night skiing at Blue. Carves great and felt fun.
Nordica Jet Fuel (84) - Also demo'd this night skiing at Blue. Carved good, no complaints
Volkl AC50 (85) - Top rated, but didn't demo. I saw this at a shop the other night and I was surprised how light the ski is. Shop guy tells me it carves great, and very stable.

So, I'm leaning away from the Top Fuel, because I already have a narrow carving ski, I enjoy, and it seems like it would fill a similiar role.
Anyone care to discuss differences between the Jet Fuel and AC50?
Which one would be more forgiving (JF?)? Less chattery? Float better? Better in the spring?

Thanks
Root

Would you go with that size again?

That's the other part I'm on the fence about, going with a 170 or 178. I prefer a shorter, more manageable ride over pure speed.

Yeah, I'm 250+, 6', need a longer ski. I tried shorter (Atomic Metrons) and liked them, but prefer the stability of a longer ski at high speeds.

I'm 5'11" 250ish, but I've lost 13lbs in the past 6 weeks and plan to get down to 210ish by November, which is another reason I'm considering the 170.

I too have the K2 Apache Crossfires (which I love for all the reasons you do)......but added the Volkl Mantras to my quiver last year. While they rip in the woods (oh and they love powder and crud), they're every bit as versatile on the groomers and hardpack. Skied them at Jay a couple of weeks ago when the woods were too "frozen" to ski and they just rip up the groomers. Checkem' out. Don't know much about the Nordicas....

I'm about 150-155lbs and I ski the Hotrod Nitrous in a 178. However, I tend to like to open them up.

go for the 178...you'll appreciate the extra stability..my Elans are 176s and there're the shortest I'm comfortable skiing on..
