A haiku about Born From Ice in response to Grassi

You will enjoy it
You make me want to watch it.
Too bad Dave has it.

Dave is my buddy. He is just getting me back from keeping Schooled for like a year.

A question to you all...
I've practically exhausted every method of dealing with pre-season ski fever I know of. I've been to all the swaps so far, I'm all set with prob more gear than I need, I've seen every ski movie I own so many times it is pathetic (except for born from ice, which Dave has) What else can I do???? Mountain biking used to work but now when I get home from work it is dark :(

you gotta wack off

Some of the other movies came with stickers that said the following...
I (HEART) HEAD SKIS

Or something along those lines...

I would love to get my hands on one of those. Especially since I make my turns on Heads. Maybe w/Epoch or Snow Gods...

They had LOTS of stickers at the movies....including some larger "SKI THE EAST" stickers.

I really enjoyed BFI. Warren Miller films are great for drooling over mountains I will never get to ski. But there is nothing like watching footage from places you have skied or will be skiing in the near future. I was amazed with the amount of bonus footage. Some of it was for laughs but seeing the shots of Mt. Washington and the bonus film was great.

So I started watching BFI last night (which I didn't think I'd seen yet) and instantly realized I HAD seen it before and now think that I already owned it. I have no idea what I did with it if I do though... I looked all over the house before ordering it because I thought I may own it, but I couldn't find it... Still some great ski porn though!

this is a bit late of a response but to get back to the whole thing about Joe Morabito talking about other stuff......who cares? Joe is an individual who skis and is in ski films. If someone asks him questions relating to some other subject, why do you care. Ski film companies don't own anyone. I filmed with Straight Line Productions last year in Colorado and Alta and certainly don't feel as though I should be restricted in the media to only talking about SLP films. The more press the individuals in their films get from outside sources, the more people will want to watch their films. In Joe's case, these are Meathead films. Good for him for getting noticed more and good for Meatheads for having him.

Also, I think the reason there wasn't as much Backcountry in Snow Gods was that there simply wasn't many good days to film backcountry in the east last year. I'm sure they would have liked to do more backcountry, as most of us do, but it wasn't an option for a good part of the season.

this is completely untrue. january and february were washes for the most part, but there was plenty of good snow, especially in march and the backcountry was primed by april. weather was no excuse, as i have often said, last year was the year of the opportunist. i am a huge meatheads supporter, but no making excuses for them. they missed some big dumps and epic turns.... or they didn't film. it wasn't for lack of good days.

There is about 15 minutes of good powder skiing between Jay and Stowe in their new movie. I'm guessing for those 15 minutes there was between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 and a half hours of raw skiing footage. To get this amount of film, you need to get out a lot. I can see only being able to get 2 hours worth of powder backcountry footage in a month and a half (at most...march through mid april). It sounds like it is easy but there is a ton of work in setting up shots, making sure the light is right, ect. You can only use so much storm footage. Powder and backcountry footage on a sunny or mostly sunny day are ideal (ask any ski film maker). Factor in the amount of snow days, the amount of sunny powder days, the amount of set up required in the backcountry, and editing and I think you are looking at 15 to 20 minutes of film for those days. It doesn't mean that they didn't get out on powder days, it may just mean either they a) didn't film or b) didn't choose to include footage with crappy light, etc that they took on some of those days.

I filmed about 9 days with Straight Line Productions over the course of the winter and those 9 days of film were edited and condensed into about 5 and a half minutes of film edited to music for their new movie. We didn't even film on days where the light wasn't right. skiing in and out of long shadows gives you snapshots of a run which means bad footage.

Powder skiing is always good for the skier but it is not always good for ski films if the light isn't right. I'm guessing to get 2 hours of raw backcountry footage, they may have had to film anywhere from 8 to 15 days in the month and a half window. That's not bad.

i shoot and edit video, so i know full well what is involved including time and the ratio of how much you need to shoot for how little actually makes the cut. the pow footage in the video seemed to come from only two days of filming in VT whereas the northern greens had a good half dozen excellent pow days and more than a few more additional decent pow days. in a matter of fact, northern green mountains reporting in with average snowfall this year. in stand by my comments that there was more than enough powder days this year for more than 15 minutes of northern VT pow skiing to make the final cut. as i mentioned else where, the bonus features are better than the actual movie because they show so much more of the pow and tree skiing. it was obviously a conscious decision to focus on the park this year, as seen in the bonus segments, they add more good pow footage and i am still surprised they only have good new england powder from two days. where were these guys in october and early december, that is what i want to know.

In october and early december they were touring and promoting their movie....just like every other ski film. They don't have the resources to be everywhere at once. If you want a straight answer about about how many days of pow got into the movie, why don't you e-mail Geoff or Chris. I'm sure they will tell you then we can all know. I sincerely doubt it was all in two days.

So, in the meantime, I've watched the backcountry segments a few times today to see if I could find different days. Other than the chic chocs, here's what I found.

One day of filming powder at Smuggs with Joe

One to two days at Jay at least. You can tell because there is significantly different weather in a few of the shots. In some, it is snowing, in others it's bluebird with no clouds anywhere in the shot.

Multiple days at Stowe. It's hard to tell how many. There are two different weather shots for stowe footage. So at least two. Plus, on cloudy/snowy days, there are at least two days of shooting which can be determined by the fact that Joe is using Head Mojo 105's in one shot and Monster's in another. It is unlikely he would change skis during a single day in the backcountry. Plus he is wearing an orange jacket in some shots and a red jacket in others. This may mean he stowed a hard shell layer in his bag at some time during the day or he wore different jackets on different days. It looks as though shots of Andrew show him with Mojo 90's in some shots and mojo 105's in other shots. Plus there is a day they filmed with Pat, John, and Will where joe and andrew and simon didn't seem present.

I'm not going to throw out a specific number of days here. but it is evident that it is certainly more than one day at Stowe.

perhaps I've gone way to far into this but I watched the movie twice today because I was bored retarded and couldn't stop thinking about skiing. Moving to Alta in 8 Days!!!

riverc0il, sorry about the sarcasm in previous posts. I hadn't had my coffee or watched ski porn yet today when I made those posts.

I think one thing that made is seem that there wasn't as much backcountry, even though it really was about 50-50 just like BFI was that the park stuff seemed more monotonous. Lots of urban or park rails with the same tricks, however sick. I really liked simon's urban kinked, S rail though. The slight lack of diversity in their park skiing (LOTS of rails and very little half pipe) dragged those portions of the movie out a little bit. But all in all, the more I watch the movie, the more I really like it. Much more artsy than last movies. Overall, perhaps their best yet.

Ha. Hi Dave. Fancy meeting you here! I didn't know you were on these forums.
Now that I've seen Snow Gods and all the bonus features like a Bajillion times, I'll let you have that too.
At this point in the game I'm more or less all ski porned out. The only real treatment now will be actually skiing. I've gotta get out and earn some turns before the lifs start running.
