My son and I skied Mount Snow today, he had a day off school in between semesters and I needed a break from work. Perfect. I had planned on bringing my daughter as well, but track practice took precedence over skiing (not cool). My son has really only been skiing for 1 year, I think we went 5 or 6 times last year and probably about that many this year, he keeps up to me just fine. Really pretty impressive if you think about it (not that I'm a pro by any stretch, but I'm no slouch either).

Thinking back, I don't think I've EVER skied mid-week, non-holiday before. It was empty. They ran all the lifts they had to to get to the terrain, but the redundant lifts were all shut down. We skied up to the lift all day, every time. Empty chairs going up the mountain all day. The slopes were pretty vacant too, I didn't keep track of how many runs we did, but we really couldn't have done any more than we did. It was colder than I expected, the wind was going pretty good on the main face, making the chair rides a bit uncomfortable, but not too bad.

We started on the main face and did a bunch of high speed runs down the wider slopes on the fresh (though pretty hard) cordouroy. We headed over to Carinthia to watch the madness - key word here is "watch". I'm not sure how big that last jump is at the bottom, but dog, those guys were hitting it big. I can't say how wimpy I felt skiing down alongside even the smaller jumps. Oh well, not my bag. Conditions were pretty good, mostly hard packed powder, very little ice. We had no problems turning all day.

After that we headed over the North Face and we spent the next hour or so lapping up and down that, throwing in some glades a few times. Awesome, and no wind! We headed back to the lodge for lunch, after which it was back to the North Face again. Wow did we have fun. High speed runs on steep slopes, it was way fun.

We left the North Face around 2:30 or so with the intent of doing a few more runs down the main face. I get off the lift and immediately tear down a blue slope, psyched up from how well we skied over at the North Face. I get confused on a turn and end up hitting a mogul field at warp speed, right under the lift. Uh oh. There were a few seconds where I was sure I was not going to pull it out, absorbing the hits with my knees, just as I thought I had brought it under control, I hit a mogul as a jump and ended up 3' in the air (see the above comment about Carinthia). Not sure how I landed that or got myself stopped without crashing, but I did. Whew. Surprisingly I got no comments from the lift riders... :-D

The last two runs we intended to be more ripping down the main face, but I really had a hard time keeping up to my son. I guess the BC stuff from yesterday caught up to me (or I'm getting OLD!). We could have gotten one more chair, but as much as this pains me to type, I just couldn't see that ending well. All in all a great day on the mountain.

Excellent TR! I love Mt. Snow midweek...it's like you have the place to yourself. Ahhh, the "Mt. Snow Mystery Wind". There's no breeze or wind at all the entire ride up there...until you get to Rt 9/100..then it picks up. I agree, the summit high speed definately takes the brunt of any wind that's blowing.

Did you guys get over to Sunbrook at all? That's always nice in the morning; especially when it's sunny out.

Yeah, we did a few runs over there, but they only had the Beartrap lift running, so hitting those trails was a bit time consuming. You had to go up Beartrap, down to the main lift then back down Sunbrook. Its funny, my son has little patience for "slow" lifts :-D...
