Resort or Ski Area: Mount Snow

Conditions: Packed powder, some groomed

Trip Report:
Got to the base lodge shortly after 8 AM, already a fair amount of choas at the demo registration tables. Need to fill out a special Marker release form if you want to ski anything with their bindings (which is at least half of the skis out there). Took about 15 minutes to get all the paperwork straight.

First stop: Volkl. I've been wanting to try some fatties for awhile. They don't have the Mantras or Gotamas so I give the Karmas a whirl. Promise to have them back in a couple runs. Take the Summit Quad up hoping to see some powder. Don't see much from the lift and I don't know the mountain well (yet). End up taking a narrow trail kind of under the old the summit local, I'm not having much fun. Should have warmed the legs up first. End up cutting over to (I think) Exhibition. Skis feel OK on the groomed. Take another run over to Snowdance which is nice- appears it hasn't been groomed, just skiier packed pow, nice stashes off to the left. Bring back the Karmas, promising myself I'll try another fat ski today.

By now there's slim pickings left at the demo, most of the skis are on the mountain. Grabbed some elans (I forget which) and spent some time on the bunny slope with the fiancee. Mount Snow's learning are is actually pretty nice: you can get some (slow moving) lift experience and not have to worry about more advanced skiiers trying to get around you. Brought back the elans after a couple runs and the fiancee heads off to the lodge.

Next up: the Elan Ripsticks GS. I head back up the quad and hit the blues in the middle of the mountain. These skis scream! The faster I go, the better they feel. Whenever I can find an opening I let them rip arching wide GS turns. Sensational on the groomers and admirable on the skier packed pow. Capable of shredding the the sides of the trail as well. I take a few more runs on mostly blue groomers before I decide it's too early in the season to have a hole punched in my pass. I would love to have a pair of these.

After lunch there's still not much to choose from. I try out the Head Monster 75s(?). They feel a lot like the Salomon Scambler Hot's I tried last week at K. A very nice all mountain. But they feel kind of light and chattery after the ripsticks; they ski like a much narrower ski than they are. Hit up carinthia (OK, some ice - windblown?) and Sunbrook (very nice conditions over there) before bringing back the Heads.

I grab my old Volants and they feel lousy after all these new skis. You have to keep these things on edge all the time and I'm too tired. A couple more main mountain runs and it's nearly 3 and I'm done.

All in all a great day. Conditions were great. The demo was a bit of a disappointment (didn't try what I was looking for, not much selection if you didn't grab it at 8 AM) and I never made it over to the north face. But I'm finally starting to get my legs under me and this was probably my best day yet.
