Conditions:Sheet ice, bare spots, wet snow, windy as hell

Today is a day I would really love to forget about. I remember the order I did everything in, so here goes.

I arrived at Carinthia around 9:30 and got into a moderately crowded lodge. 9:35 and I'm in the relatively short line for Nitro Express. That lift is very fast, but that's the only one I can call fast at that place. From the top, I took Milky Way into Sunbrook and rode up the short Beartrap Double. From that, I skiied Deer Run all the way to the main base. Deer Run looked like what Lower Bunny Buster at Killington usually looks like opening weekend. You really were putting your life on the line skiing it.

I waited 15 minutes before finally boarding the Summit Express. It is slower than Nitro and stops every 15 seconds. At the top, I fought through the crowds unloading off the 5 lifts that end at the summit. I went down Fallen Timbers, which at the time, was scratchy, but okay.

I got on the Outpost Triple with no wait at all and took a run down Chute. It was pretty icy with big patches of it the entire way. I waited about 2 minutes before boarding the Challenger triple, home of the Mardi Gras tree. Someone posted a picture of it in the gallery last year.

From the summit, I took a run down Thanks Walt/Cloud Nine. Thanks Walt sucked getting to Cloud Nine. Cloud Nine was smooth sailing besides the fact that there were about 500 people on the trail at once. At the bottom, I waited 5 minutes to board the Beartrap double.

From the top of that, I skiied the one, the only, BEARTRAP. Unfortunately, the trail was all icy, irregularly shaped bumps. I called them Wachusett bumps. Oh well, it was a nice workout for a 1,000 foot trail.

I waited 2 minutes again for Beartrap Double and from the top of that, skiied Long John to Nitro. Nitro was pretty good right under the lift. I cut around the ungroomed part.

I ate lunch at Carinthia base. $8.25 for a cheeseburger and $4 for a bottle of Mountain Dew!?!? Not to mention that unlike last year, the food sucked. It made me appreciate Wachusett even more.

After lunch, I took a ride up Heavy Metal Double (which is a pretty quick fixed-grip) and took a run down Inferno. That was probably the best run on the mountain with not much ice.

I took a ride up the double again and fought through the novices on Deer Run to the Sundance Triple. Soooo ssslllooowww. Finally got to the top of that and went down Ridge. Some parts were good, others were bare spots and SHEET ICE. I'm not kidding when I say one part was a replica of an ice rink on a slope.

I got to the base and rode up the Summit Local Triple. There wasn't a line at the bottom for it which is why I took it, but the wind 3/4 of the way up was almost unbearable. You were completely above the treeline for about 3 minutes. From the summit, I went down Canyon to Standard. Canyon had a lot of ice and Standard was good, but crowded.

The rest of the day, I skiied mainly the same runs so I don't feel like writing on. Mine Shaft was funny as usual (steep, but very short and it cracks me up watching every single person hitting the bottom in a tuck). I hit the Pipe once which was pretty good. I took a hard spill on Ridge after hitting the hockey rink.

I don't know if I'll ski the rest of this week, but I'll be at Wawa at least twice next week.

It was that bad. People were continuously going to get their money back throughout the day. Whether they got it or not, I don't know, but a lot of people were ticked.

The biggest problem was the lack of warnings of the thin cover and ice. There was one time I was halfway down a nice groomed trail with no bailout. All of a sudden, a sign that says "Thin Cover" pops up and then I hit all kinds of grass and rocks and junk. They should have had the thin cover signs at the beginning of the trails. 75% of the trails are running on about 6" of base and less.

I've blackballed MS 4 years ago..rude staff, smelly, dirty lodges, over priced Ecoli burgers, lack of terrain. Friends of ours have a house there and keep asking us up, we always have "something" going on..just cant stand that place. I wrote a letter 4 yrs ago complaining and they sent me 2 free passes and a $20 lunch coupon...I did try again and still was terrible

You know its all to do with the NCP. I was there on saturday before any of this foul weather came and it was beautiful. I was skiing natural snow trails and the woods all day long. Not really crowded either, although, I never went to the bottom of the front face throughout the day. I had an absolutely amazing day on the same hill..just 5 days earlier.

Should be better today and this week after the rain.

Also, the few times I've bought food at Wachusett, I noticed no big difference in food quality or prices. Just a bunch of 16 year olds in tight jeans trying their best to make me feel like a filthy old man.
