Resort or Ski Area: Mount Snow, VT

Conditions: Mainly PP

Trip Report:

Left home around 7:30 and got a nice spot at Carinthia and clicked in at 10. Got in the pretty quick singles line for the quad and was off. Came right back down under the quad on Upper Nitro and then took a left down Tunnel Vision and went in the glades, Claim Jumper. The coverage was actually pretty good as long as you don't mind a tree root or two and a few rocks. There was also a 3-4 foot drop over a fallen tree. When those trees ended I got back onto Nitro to the bottom. The steep at the bottom was pretty skied off. Interesting thing about this run is that right when I got off the lift, it stopped and it didn't start again until after I got to the bottom.

Because of that, I slogged over to the Heavy Metal double with about 50 other people. Before I loaded, 4 people tried getting on a 2 person chair, providing a few laughs. Anyway, I took Deer Run off the top of that and headed to the absolute zoo of a main base.

The Canyon Quad was down for a while in the morning, leaving the Summit Quad and Triple to handle all the crowds. Heck, there was even a line at Ego Alley. I decided to brave the Quad line which was way out of the chutes and was about a 5 minute wait in the singles line. After the long, cold ride, I headed down into the North Face via Plummet. The middle was slightly scraped, but the sides had beautiful loose stuff. Overall a good trail.

Skied on the Challenger Triple and came right back down underneath on Freefall. It was in pretty good shape besides a few scattered scratchy spots.

Headed up the Outpost Triple and went underneath on Chute. This was easily the most skied off at the top, but got better towards the bottom. The left had nice loose stuff the whole way.

Went back up the Outpost again and took Cloud Nine into Sunbrook. It had great packed powder at the beginning, but I stayed on Cloud Nine when Thanks Walt branched off and it turned into very poor coverage and conditions.

Next up were about 5 or 6 runs on Beartrap. There was a great line right down the middle of the trail with a few bumps scattered about on the sides of the trail. The hardpack in between the bumps was somewhat soft and easy to edge midday, so I enjoyed plenty of runs, tunes, and some occasional sunshine.

After those nice runs, I headed back to Carinthia base via one of my personal favorites, Mine Shaft. I find it fun standing at the bottom watching everyone straightline the last pitch and race down the rest in a tuck. From there I took Prospector which is a nice mellow cruiser in the woods.

Lunch was a bit of a letdown. It took nearly 15 minutes because only 1 cash register was open. There was also no pizza, so I settled for a cheeseburger, fries, and mountain dew for $13.

It was pushing 12:45, so I headed back out and started with a run down Mine Shaft and down the crowded Long John to the sllloooowwww Sundance Triple. From that, I took the nice, but very short cruiser, Ridge. Very nice conditions on that, but it is too short to really do a lot.

Next up was a trip up the ancient Ego Alley Triple. They were practice racing at the top of Ego Alley, so I took mid Exhibition which was very nice packed powder and then cut back over to Ego Alley at the bottom of the race course. Ego Alley was a bit more solid, but still nicely carveable (perfect for the racers). The Yard Sale pitch was pretty skied off.

Headed up the Summit Quad next and took Upper Choke which was deserted and had nice snow. Cut back onto Canyon which was also nice. Went over to Snowdance. Nice conditions down the left and damn is that thing wide.

Made the mistake of taking the Canyon Quad (seemed like it stopped 15 times after a 10 minute wait) and headed down River Run. Took the Challenger triple and decided to check out its natural namesake. It was laden in ice, frozen bumps, dirt, grass, and just a lot of junk. It's one of the best trails on the mountain, but man were those conditions tough. Took the rest of Freefall from there which was still nice on the left.

Next, since I tried Challenger, I figured I might as well give Olympic a go. Again, a great trail, but covered in absolute junk. Yet it was a lot of fun. About halfway down, I made the great decision of checking out the Trials. The lines were endless and the snow was great (half-a-pole deep in some places). It was so good that I went back for seconds. It was almost as good as Poser Woods at Stowe (next to Nosedive... I think that's what the locals call it)... not too steep, but tons of lines. I never knew such good skiing existed at Mount Snow.

It was 3:30 and North Face was closing up, so I headed down Cloud Nine to Thanks Walt (much better than lower Cloud Nine). I took a run down Beartrap which was frozen solid by that point. I finished out the day with 3 runs down Claim Jumper, which was still in very nice shape even with all the traffic it got.

I headed out at 4:20 and got caught in an hour-long traffic jam on 100 trying to get through Wilmington. Really showed just how crowded it was today. It was definitely my best day this year so far though. I should have a couple Wachusett reports next week. As for Mount Snow, I'm hoping to get back by mid January and I won't make the mistake of leaving North Face (unless it is to check out Beartrap a few times).

Sounds like a fun day man...

The Trials are definitely under-rated... very good, not steep tree skiing. When the snow is good, I agree, Challenger and Olympic are about as good as it gets. They definitely must have been pretty solid under foot. On the front, Ledge is high up on my list as well, along with some runs off the Sundance.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that all but 1 of my days at Snow have been either vacation or early season, I don't have much experience with the front face. I tried some trails out yesterday, but someday I'll have to get up there midweek because it just wasn't fun trying to get around the base.

And I agree on Challenger and Olympic... Jaws and Little Steep are fun as well. Theres a pretty good base on all the natrual trails so one good snowfall and they'll be 100% again.

For sure. If you like the natural new england style runs, keep these names in mind when you do:

Iron Run (Carinthia), Uncles, Ledge, Overbrook, One more Time.

Those are some of my favs on the front : )

zand have you ever checked out this guide? http://www.skiernet.com/mount-snow.html

you are good with the trail names, I've been to Mount Snow for 3 vacations and I still can't remember the names, I know which ones I like and how to get there but if I try to explain it to someone, it doesn't work out. I'll have to actually bring a trail map next time, and check out some of the trails you mentioned I don't think I've hit some of them before.
