Conditions - Marked trails: powder AM, changing to primarily packed powder in PM. Glades: Powder and Packed Powder
A wonderful day of skiing, albeit one of the busiest days of the year. Conditions were powder of the "cement" variety - that is to say a harder to push around variety, not at all wet. To say Mount Snow was "fully loaded" is a fair statement - the parking lots, lodges were bursting. I am glad to see (for the resorts sake) a booming business this week. It will sustain us all in the powder days to come
Tracked out very early (we didn't arrive until 1030), but remained deep along the edges here and there. Most of the rain damage (ice) had been hidden except on small patches of steeps. Crappiest trails of the day were Olympic and another over on North face, with most of the trail scraped away. Best runs were on the front (i.e., Exhibition, Ego Alley, Lodge.) Getting bumped up all over the place, even on the easy greens. Sunny for a few minutes - the clouds were moving rapidly across the summit, but snow squalls persisted all day, more heavily into the afternoon. I'd say another 1" fell during the day based on the snow brushed off the car.
Sundance Base area, 4pm (we parked here because it's very convenient, but it's slow to get a lift out of this area)
Sundance, end of day:
Exhibition:
Ego Alley?
They were making snow on north face, but for some reason, the only lift running was the one where the snowmakers were blasting. Unpleasant and easily solved by running the other lift.
I had forgotten how fast the Grand Summit Express chair was. The lines, were 5-10 mins max, much shorter in the single of course.
Temps were very pleasant, in the mid 20s all day, with light winds down below. Very unpleasant at the top however - very, very windy. So windy in fact, there were 2 ski patrol flanking each chair telling people when to stand, when to move, holding chairs. This was followed on the down ramp by 4 Ambassadors to assist falls and dropped equipment, which there was many. But they kept the lift moving.
Glades skiing was outstanding - I can speak particularly for "The Trials" off the north face. Simply powder and packed powder, never hit bottom anywhere, not even ice. The whole glade area was easily ski-able. MS does a nice job of marking it's boundary line, which gives a nice sense of security when you don't know your way around.
Glades:
Yours Truly
On Wednesday, after the masses depart, Mount Snow will be heaven.
