Resort or Ski Area: Mount Snow, VT
Conditions: Spring, Bare, CORN!
Trip Report: Monday night as I was going to bed, after reading the posts about day totals for the season, and being slightly depressed, I decided that I wouldn't let my season end yet. Having no class and only work on Tuesdays, and looking at the weather for this weekend, I said "Screw work, I'm going skiing on what will probably be one of the last sunny days that I can do so on."
Arrived at about 9:30 am to Carinthia lodge. The lodge is closed upstairs, but the basement and bathrooms are open. Changed and ran to the lift as fast as my burdened feet would let me.
Until about 10:30, things were mostly solid. After that, the corduroy started getting pretty mushy, and even parts of the trails in the shadows were soft. North Face, which I checked out at about 10:30, was still scratchy and solid. Enough of that, I said. Headed over to where Bear Trap is on Sunbrook and hiked up to the top of the Double Lift there. (Both lifts out of Sunbrook are closed for the season now) Looked over the edge and saw, to my surprise, that the trail was beautiful. No bare patches, direct sunlight, so everything was a corny, mushy, bumpy heaven. Why oh why was this trail closed!? A quick expletive, and down I went. The hike out of Sunbrook really isn't all that bad (only about 400' vertical) For anyone that's heading to Snow in the next few days, I recommend checking it out. Well worth the hike back up to where the top of Carinthia's Quad is.
Ate lunch and then checked out North Face again. This is where things got good. 'Chute' , one of the few diamond trails over there, was bumped from top to bottom. And now it was soft. SWEET sweet bumps with only a bit of ice between to keep you focused. I did 6 runs in a row and my legs couldn't take it anymore, so I headed home.
All in all, things were pretty good. I'd say get there pretty soon, though, because their snow is not going to last more than a week or two. It's still too bad that Alta is not a 'let's-play-hooky-today' trip away, though. *sigh* I'll take what I can get.
