Resort or Ski Area: Mount Snow, VT
Conditions: Main: Powder, Packed powder. VERY infrequent FRGR in select scraped off spots; good base on all marked trails; great pow in the woods, though it could use more base.
Trip Report:
We thinks we made the best choice here rather than Loon. Yes, there was 8" pow from the other day. The groomers earned their keep, taking care of the crap/niar that fell from the skies one week ago.
The 8" made it quite enjoyable. Lots of pow to be found all over. Spent the day on the Main Face and the North Face. Nice pow, on half of Exhibition - really gave us a workout. I can't single out any one trail on the main face, they were all pretty sweek. No bumps to be found anywhere on the mountain, save for Ripcord, which was closed.
On the North face, challenger and chute were great. Freefall was opened mid-day, it had kind of a crusty frgr atop it, it was clearly topped with gobs of manmade, left ungroomed. Even with skier traffic, though it didn't loosen up. Regardless it was good and a really fun day. Olympic, without snowmaking was had a really crappy entry on top, lots of rocks and dirt. But as soon as you got passed the top entry, it was great.
You really couldn't go wrong, 1 week after the rains. Snowmaking was running full tilt all over, in prep for the weekend no doubt. You'll really get your money's worth this weekend. It should stand up well to a crowd.
The groomers, to their credit, did not overgroom the fresh pow, thankfully. In many cases, it was just left as it fell. I was so light though, it hadn't bumped up anywhere.
Did the glades "the trial" off of Olympic on the North Face. They were fun, with lots of pow, but I wished I had a pair of rock skis, because the underlying base was thin. Nothing icy though. Trees were fairly tight in "The Trial", had kinda hope for a bit more speed, but we got a workout instead.
Did about five NASTAR runs. They do a good course there. Nicely managed. The course is a little steeper than average, nothing scary though. It's a great course to really improve on, challenging, tricky in the mid section, but I found my handicap improved.
Ate on top at about 2pm. Great bluebird day; you could see forever. Not particularly busy, worst lift line was 5 mins at the quad to the top. Temps at the base were 30 at 4-5pm, suprisingly. Got a tad bit windy later in the day, but nothing adverse. No need for a face mask.
Great day, recommend a trip for any level. Bring a lot of dough or pack a lunch though.
