Mountain Creek Sold?

As an age-old snowboarder at Mountain Creek, I can say that there was a more interesting park on North/Vernon peak. I do like some of the freestyle runs on South, but much prefer the speed of the Cabriolet.

Anyway, back on point - I work over in Pelican in Morris Plains. The rumor coming in from ski patrol people at MC is indeed that the son of the Mulvhills is/has bought Mountain Creek. This is ONLY a rumor, mind you, that might have just become a running joke amongst the ski patrol guys to freak all the boarders out - here's why:

The legend goes like this - Mulvhill wants to take South and Bear and make it Condo-owner access only, for his Crystal Spring resorts. That'd be a bigger "f**k you" to Vernon than his past actions. Picture all the freestyle guys crammed in with the newbies and cruisers on 2 peaks instead of 4.

The rumor also goes on to say that Mulvhill is buying Hidden Valley as well, shutting down its slopes and making it a concert/night entertainment venue.

This is all rumor/hearsay for now, so don't get freaked out - yet. It is true, Intrawest is something like 500 mil behind in their payments, and Whistler is being/has been auctioned off DURING the Winter Olympics this year. Intrawest already has sold Copper to a Utah based company.

Intrawest is going down, but what will become of the east coast resorts, like Mountain Creek and Stratton remains yet to be seen.

Good idea. Remove all the terrain parks so the resort goes from behind extremely profitable to not profitable at all. Terrain Parks in general have saved smaller resorts like MC, etc. You oldschool skiers will never learn. Just like the dinosaurs, you've had your chance...the times have changed.

That isn't what I meant. I meant take it out of South.

All of South/Bear shouldn't be park. There was nothing wrong with the old format. A jump line on Flying Fox and a park in The Gully/Exhibition would suffice. Along with that give the boarders back the Tylenol Main Park at Vernon. I wouldn't really miss the Great Northern trails and the boarders prefer the Cab while the skiers prefer the lifts. Then move the racing back to Big Bear where it belongs instead of leaving the trail dormant all the time.

Unfortunately however, there's been pretty much nothing done since a year or two after they bought the place....and they wasted a lot of money moving the pipe around and putting in the Cabriolet, which should be a normal HS lift.

Some obvious things:

MC's snowmaking is pretty poor, to say the least.
The Sojourn chair feels and looks unsafe.
The horrible set of bubbles that are considered a "lodge".
That hotel was one giant waste of money.

And I won't even start about the promised terrain pods between Granite and South that were supposed to be built.

They had a great master plan for the place when they bought it, but somehow it all just never happened. It's a shame really.

Gondola was supposed to be a six pack and several new trails were never cut. Those 2 extra trails down Granite looked great on paper. And they have a whole setup for a few intermediate trails and a separate lift for in between South and Granite.

Copper being sold in November to Powdr is really interesting. I'm surprised kmart regulars have not taken out an ad in the Summit Country paper welcoming Copper to the Powdr family? Maybe not. :lol: From Park City to Bend to Killington to Summit County. Is this the ski resort's version of a "trail of tears" or the path of financial salvation?

Ski resort operators, like every other industry, over-expanded during the boom, and many of them are saddled with huge debt loads. The ski industry is tough, because the season is short and highly weather-dependent, and there are high fixed costs that can't easily be scaled back during bad economic times. It costs the same amount to make snow, groom trails, and spin a chairlift, regardless of the number of skiers who show up.

People like to take shots at Powdr, but their finances are in much better shape than a lot of their peers.

I hate it as a skier also. I'd much rather take the slower triple chair, but it's never running when I'm there.

Well hopefully those rumors aren't true. It would suck if HV closed for skiing and I was stuck with a 2 peak MC right by my house.

The rumors that Hidden Valley is being sold and shut down are NOT true.

The sale of Mountain Creek has absolutely nothing to do with the Hidden Valley ski area. Hidden Valley is owned by a totally different group. They are working hard at upgrading the ski area.

Maybe the disgusting tents at Mountain Creek will finally disappear!
