Date(s) Skied: Sunday February 17, 2008, 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Resort or Ski Area: Mad River Glen
Conditions: Sunny to start, mostly cloudy by later, temps in the teens up to about 30, no precip. Occasionally gusty but mostly calm.
Trip Report: Been swamped with work but finally broke free for a day yesterday to ski with my sons at MRG. Nice weather and lines were long -- a patroller posted on SKIVT-L that it was the most crowded he'd ever seen it -- but the boys didn't complain once and I was surprised by my own patience, as I've been spoiled by being able to ski mostly weekdays in recent years. We agreed that the runs on the long uncrowded trails were well worth even a 15- or 20-minute wait.
We stayed on the Sunnyside double all day as it was my younger son's first time skiing MRG, my older boy also had not done the single yet and we agreed this wasn't the day to try -- and that was fine. Porcupine was the boys' pick of the day and usually we had it entirely to ourselves. Also, early in the day we hit S-Turn and they were a little intimidated by the top of it but by later on they were skiing it aggressively -- a heart-warming sight.
On the MRG web site Eric had posted that the powder from the other day was the consistency of Bisquick and he really nailed it -- even where groomed it had a very silky feel to it. Not anymore, I'm afraid, but glad we got out there yesterday.
p.s. my avatar is of my son at the top of Sunnyside last year during President's Day week. Amazing how much deeper the base is this year -- yesterday his head was a little above the top of that trail map sign behind him. And yes he's grown over the past year but not that much.
