Conditions: Steady drizzle, 35 degrees, foggy at the top, soft snow.
Trip Report: Went on a bus trip from Sundown Ski and Surf in Levittown LI. So many people booked they needed 2 buses. Got up there and it was lightly raining and foggy. A few warm up runs down the main face and we headed over to the N. Face. Found great snow and moguls. Pretty much stayed there most of the time. Spring like conditions, no ice, so the moguls where great, some where pretty huge. Got warmed up enough and decided to find this run called Ripcord. this is supposed to be one of the steepest runs in the east. When I hear that I'm skepticle, 37 degrees? Found it and it was a steep moguled up drop, kind of like a head wall, but 37 degrees? Ah...no. It was as steep as lower K27 at Hunter but no way 37 degrees. I've skied that kind of pitch out west and this was closer to 30 maybe less. Whatever, it was in nice shape until the end of the day when it turned to glue. The winds picked up throughout the day and even lightning started, which closed the lifts a little while. We where getting so soaked we had to dry off anyway. I've never been this wet, the wife poured out a few ounces from her boots...The place was pretty empty as expected which was great as it can be a zoo on weekends. After a while the 35 degree temps started to take it's toll but I stayed out there until 3:30. Couldn't find my wife for a while, she bailed out of going down Ripcord and ended up in the plunge...which is way worse, Ripcord in the trees! Her ski fell off on the cat track and she had to get it...in the trees. A tough time was had. Thank God she made it out of there.
All in all it was a tough day but worth it. Not very fond of skiing in the rain but this is an outdoor sport and you have to deal with it sometimes.
