SNOWSHOE, West Virginia -- It's another gorgeous powder day at Snowshoe Mountain. More than 11" of fresh powder have fallen on the slopes of Snowshoe since New Year's Day. Snow continues to fall lightly Thursday morning, with forecasts predicting the storm to ease up by noon. Final accumulation could see a full foot of fresh powder added to the slopes for this coming weekend. In addition to the natural snowfall, Snowshoe's expert snowmaking crew has been hard at work. Up to 240 snowguns spread across the mountain have been hard at work the last two nights. Already skiing and riding on the most open terrain in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic, Snowshoe is expected to add significant skiable acres for this weekend, including opening Cupp Run and Camp 99. Cupp is Snowshoe's 1.5 mile, 1,500' signature slope in the Western Territory. Camp 99 is the second of three new trails in the South Mountain area to debut this season. The Silver Creek area will also see significant trail additions this weekend, and as of Saturday, every beginner trail in the basin area will be open for skiing and riding, and all 14 lifts on the mountain should be operating. Today, Snowshoe has 37 open trails and 11 lifts running. Night skiing and riding and the awesome 5-lane tubing hill are both open in the Silver Creek area.
Snowshoe has consistently had the region's best conditions since opening on November 21st. Despite some periods of rain and warm spells in December, the mountain has kept a consistent base across its open slopes, and has regularly added terrain as the season has progressed. Guests spending the holidays at Snowshoe were treated to a two-foot base and almost 60% of the mountain's slopes open for skiing and riding. Lift lines were kept to a minimum, as skiing and riding were available from the Northern Tract, all the way to the slopes of the South Mountain area. Great conditions at the Silver Creek area also helped relieve crowds, so skiers and riders were able to enjoy the conditions to the fullest.
This morning, many of Snowshoe's open slopes have more than a two-foot base of packed-powder, and a handful of slopes were purposefully left ungroomed overnight for incredible powder-skiing conditions this morning. One of those trails was Sawmill, the first of the South Mountain's three new trails to open this season. Sawmill debuted on December 21st and has been receiving rave reviews. The steep pitch offers challenging terrain and Snowshoe regulars are delighted by the new terrain for the season. The adjacent Sawmill Glades area should open shortly, as this natural snowfall has greatly enhanced conditions in the new tree-skiing area.
