Cannon exceeded expectations today. Snowmaking trails were actually very good. Upper-mid-lower Ravine was the best. Upper had fun whales that made it different every run.

Avalanche was absolutely horrendous. It bordered on being irresponsible to have open. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that someone was seriously injured on it.

Everything else was somewhere in between.

There were zero crowds today, which helped a lot. I expect the 2-4-1 will draw more people tomorrow. Hopefully they crank out the overnight snowmaking, open some terrain, and spread things out a bit for tomorrow.

Temps were tough for picture taking. So this was all I got. Bundled up on the summit...

I couldn't believe they had Avalanche open in that condition. I parked at the tram and didn't head over that way until late in the afternoon when I was leaving. That was quite the sketchy final run for the day...jello legs down a complete sheet of ice with hardly any visibility.

I thought it sucked a few weeks ago, too. It would be nice if they at least roped off the top and had a few gates to pass through and marked it as "experts only". It would at least give people a little bit of warning...

I was at Crotched this morning (New Years Day). I tend to go there when I want to avoid crowds and or if weather conditions have been rough. They really have the ability to recover fast. It skied very well and they were making snow and grooming currently unopened trails this morning. A few firm patches here and there but overall conditions were good and there were no lines. It should be a decent weekend up there.

I was also there from 10:30-3 and was really impressed. Almost all open runs were resurfaced and Velocity opened. Must have been 15-20 fan guns running all day, and UFO should open soon. The only wait for the Rocket was once for 8-9 chairs, ski on most of the time.

Cannon was terrible yesterday. The only good spot was was ByPass to Lower Cannon under the Eagle Cliff. This sucks.

Well it is wide open and while you can slide a long way and gain speed quickly there is a big flat at the bottom and no trees so injury would be limited. Well your clothes could catch on fire from friction.:)

Yesterday was my first visit to Cannon ever with that level of nasty conditions. I can't recall the last time I've skied somewhere with that hard of boiler plate covering 90% of the open terrain. My comment to Puck It was, "So, this is why Bode is as good as he is. It's from skiing this." It was humbling and pure survival skiing for me. I still enjoyed myself, but I'm in no rush to repeat such a day.

Props to Cheese though. Dudes got massive ones. Still flying down the hill without care of the ice.

did 3 days @ Mt snow earlier in the week..

Sunday - rain in AM (didn't ski it), afternoon was warmish and snow was spring like - soft but heavy.. first day of season and legs weren't ready for that heavy snow.

got cold after that and conditions went back to "winter". Mt snow did good job blowing snow and grooming Wed was better than Monday. they just need (like everyone else) some natural snow to fill in the mountain.

We ended up skiing Bretton Woods (12/25), Gunstock (12/26), Okemo (12/31), and Cannon (1/1) so far during the vacation break and will finish off with Pats Peak (1/3) and Ragged (1/4).

Got to Bretton Woods right after the r%$n ended, even driving in wet precip on the way (wife was going to kill me if my hunch did not pan out). Turns out, it was one of our best days over the past week or so. I ended up waxing our skis with a warmer temp wax and it paid off!

Gunstock was sketchy! All of the MM was refrozen and there was not much for new MM on it. We thought tht the earlier temps above 32 would have softened up things but did not. We were on our edges a lot! We made the best of it and enjoyed being out!

We went to Okemo to meet friends from various locations. I expected things to be firm and cold so I tuned our skis the night before, sharpening edges and waxing with a cold temp wax. This paid of here as well. Okemo does a great job making snow and they recovered from icy conditions in good shape. Heard from regulars that that was not the story on Monday before though. In any case, the conditions were still firm but edgable. It was groomers all day but it was fast, fun and pretty exciting IMO. Yes it was cold too!

Cannon was a bit of a disappointment but in the same respect we made the best of it! There were lots of spots that were skied off down to ice which my wife was not happy about. I skied down Gary's and Rocket which were both very skiable but where were lots of spots with ice. I planned on skiing Avalanche but after talking to Puck it, DHS and Cannonball I bagged that run and we opted to ski the Tuckerbrook area which we never do, but we figured that is their beginner area so there might be snow there and there was. The best coverage that we found was in the Tuckerbrook area and under the Eagle Cliff chair to skiers right. Garys and Rocket were skiable since they are wide enough and best on the edges. Everything else had too many people merging under sketchy conditions! So, wind, blown off runs - ah there is the Cannon that is referred to from time to time! One of the highlights - meeting Puck it, DHS, dmiller(?) and Cannonball - wished we could have made some runs but time was short.

Pats Peak will be the for Ride and Ski event which I will be helping with. Heard they have things in good shape there - then again they have great snow making and it is a smaller mountain.

Ragged - technically still up in the air on this one. Also considering Cannon and Gunstock!

All things considered - we have taken what the mountain gives us and have enjoyed being outside!

I wonder how Cannon is looking with the 3-4 inches of snow that fell last night.

Holy moley, 50-100 cars. Why is there that much traffic northbound on a Friday morning?

http://www.wmur.com/news/50100-car-pileup-in-ashalnd/30498106

Lots of skiing/snowboarding traffic! I was seeing many roof racks loaded up!

I passed through that area on my way to work this morning shortly before that happened. There was a snow squall that was literally blinding snow. However, I have to say, there were assholes who felt it was ok to fly down the fast lane - would not be surprised if this is how this happened.
