.....I heard from a very good source that Killington will open for skiing this weekend, top to bottom on the K-1. Look for an announcement tomorrow or early Friday. (weather and snow conditions permitting) They will trumpet their improvements to the snowmaking system as allowing them to open much faster than normal with a premium skiing product.

After last year, they don't want to be embarassed by and lose skier visits to Mt. Snow and Sunday River. The intention to open early has been kept under wraps because they don't want to "tip their hand" to the competiton.

There is around 5 guns now running at the base and up Bunny Buster. Interesting test..? 26 degrees at the base. Snowmakers where working there as well. Might just be trying to get open.

I think it would be great if K opened ASAP, but the idea goes against Powdr's operation model. For the sake of skiers and riders, I hope they have changed their minds and maybe then they'll change their minds about spring, too!

I believe that last season they discovered that their operation model in the east just doesn't cut it.

If guns are going on lower Bunny Buster, that's the bottom of top to bottom skiing. Looks like they are aiming for tomorrow or Friday.

Thought I saw a report of 10" from K somewhere? That shot of Bunny doesn't look like much coverage. Perhaps that was a summit reading  Regardless, if they open T2B this weekend, I might be down for that instead of turn earning on Sunday.

Thanks for the stoke HS, but ... we are testing a new Ratnik Industries snowmaking gun on lower Bunny tonight. It is of the Low E variety and we are comparing it to the HKD gun and our own K-3000 in output tests. We do have more than 100 guns, pretty much all HKD Low E tower-mounted sleds (the ones pictured on the Insider) in production on Rime, Reason, Upper East Fall and Great Northern tonight.

We will continue to stockpile snow on the upper sections of Killington Peak and move down the mountain as conditions permit. The current snowmaking forecast has an open window through early Friday morning, then another window Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, followed by a significant warmup for next week.

So does that mean I shouldn't make plans to ski Killington this weekend???

Thanks for putting up two Insiders in the same day!:daffy:

Seems like a very non-commital answer to me. Notice how we didn't get the "...in preparation for our scheduled opening day of Nov. 14th."

It sounds like they have a chance to open, but won't announce until they have enough snow to make it happen....which might be by tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning. With Sunday River calling an opening, and Mt. Snow getting lots of free press the last week or so, I'm sure they'd love to rub it in their faces with a big top to bottom opening.

While I'm sure they mgiht have to juggle the staffing a bit, Killington has to have enough full time and part time people to make it happen on short notice. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if you saw Chris Nyberg or Tom Horrocks out loading gondola cars on Saturday morning.

IIRC, it's also the first time the Wobbly Barn Halloween party has been on a weekend in a while, thus alot of regular Killington weekenders already have plans to come up. Plus the Sushi Yoshi Goodguys party on Sunday.

Like I previously said, it's great for all skiers and riders is K opens, but I hardly think they would be rubbing anything in anyone's faces. Boyne and Peaks have brought in good competition, but neither company is out there talking smack about weather K wants to open a few trails or not. If they wanted to do they, Boyne would focus on Sugarloaf in the early season and end the argument before it started. K and Mount Snow may be in close competition for customers, but Boyne could care less. They market to a different audience and difference northeastern demographic.

With the economy the way it is and people worried about the cost of travel, I think that the more areas open means that there's one that much closer for someone to get to, who may not get the chance. If one of those mountains is K, Hunter, Woodbury, Snow, or The Cat, it's all good for the sport!

Looks like some additional "testing" of guns on lower great Northern since last night, That be the very last section of the top to bottom. Shame all that snow won't be used until 11/14
