Hi all -- Just resumed skiing this past winter. :) Can anyone suggest a competent ski shop in the Hudson Valley area or nearby regions where I can get accurate advice regarding the purchase of ski boots, skis and bindings? The local ski shop near my house seems to be staffed exclusively by stoner teenagers.

Thanks,

I can't really vouch for how much the staff at these places knows, but the places I have probably used most often over the years are Cury's Ski Shop in northern NJ on the east side of Rt. 17 (Ramsey, I think, but maybe Mahwah), and Princeton Ski Shops in Westchester (used to be in Elmsford, I think they moved, so I'm not sure exactly where).

The Princeton Elmsford location is open -- but I was there 2 weeks ago and the staff is dead to the world, minimum wage chain store types.

Another Westchester shop I'd recommend highly is Hickory & Tweed, in Armonk. Ask for Skip, who owns the shop, and he'll be very knowledgable. Same with the manager types, I don't recall specific names. Very good bootfitters. They have a lot of younger kids on the shop floor to handle the traffic on busy days but if you're patient - or don't go on a busy day -- you'll be fine. (Of course if this is the shop and these are the stoner kids you're reacting to - oops.) Downside of H&T is it's pricey but I believe they have a tent sale coming up May 12 that may be worth checking out.

But before you throw yourself at the mercy of a ski shop do a little reading here, and even more at the gear forums on www.epicski.com. Also see www.realskiers.com - worth $20 subscription fee for unvarnished ski reviews and technical information, not the marketing mumbo jumbo you see on ski company websites or magazine ads.

take the time and head north to a real shop with real techs and people who know what they are doing!! If you are investing that much $$$ into your gear, you want it to be right...take a trip, you'll thank yourself later
