Why do some people insist on turning on the traverses? Traverses are to get one part of the mountain to the other as fast as possible. If you need to check your speed, just snowplow or skid. Don't take up 3/4th the trail linking turns, people are gliding faster than you and want to pass.

If you can carve and can gain speed from carving, then have at it....(come to think of it, I might start doing that on the traverses...lol.)

I feel your pain.

Nothing worse than coming from Jordan Bowl via Kansas and coming upon a small group of "left to righters" to break your stride. (unless you are on a snowboard when this happens)

I have been known to cut through on a skis width but always shout out "on your left/right".

Why? Because it's less tiring to turn (skid) to scrub speed than to snowplow. (see the other thread on whether skier or boarder scrape more snow off the trail)

And even if they're not scrubing speed, it's still more stable to be on edge a tiny bit.

What's wrong with taking up 3/4 of the trail? As long as it's not the whole trail they're taking up, why can't you just pass on the edge?

I have no problems with the traverses at speed. But I feel bad for the people I yell at so they don't turn in front of my line while passing. This is more of a PSA for people who don't know what's up.

Because they are learning to ski....like you once did...when was the last time you picked up a new hobbie? I think your ego could use some humble pie. We should go for a bike ride together....

Because they are learning to ski...

People should learn to not turn on traverses. Killington has a huge beginner area - Snowshed, Rams Head, and Northbrook are all fantastic and grouped together.

Maybe you should post some rulz.....I thought all of killington was a beginner area...except the backside. That's where the powder is.

What kind of traverse?

Like a Killington traverse or a traverse like in a bowl out at Snowbird for instance?

Cause there were some F'd up traverses out there...

If you don't want to feel bad for the people you yell at why don't you treat people with a bit of politeness and not YELL at them. The down hill skier always has the right of way. Period. This is more of a PSA for people who won't exercise common courtesy.

This is what I was thinking. I'm not really sure what traverses you're talking about? There aren't any true "traverses" at K-Mart. Those are just trails that go across the mountain. True traverses are so narrow that one cannot pass another skier (or boarder) without actually moving off the traverse and then pulling back in around them.

Wrong... If someone is downhill of you and enters a trail without looking uphill and you can't stop in time... they are at fault.

It's incumbent upon them to follow the "code"

#4 - Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.

DOH! You all didn't realize that DMC used to be a hall pass monitor in Jr. High School and he parlayed that into a Skier's Responsibility Code enforcement officer.

Im just sick of intermediate gapers hiding behind the "code" because they can't judge or do not care about the laws of physics and speed...

And besides... If you on a traverse which way is down? You actually crossing a trail...

Sometime I think people just have it out for Highwaystar and anything he says they attack...

In the HighwaySuperTop30Star scenario these godawful noobs who are so thoughtless as to take up skiing and spoil his alpine experience while they become the next generation of people who provide the business that actually keeps ski areas open -- ah yes, sorry, my point: He said they were making turns to check speed so there must be some pitch. I'd surmise that "down" is in the direction from the higher elevation toward the lower elevation, but I'm an open-minded guy and would love to hear other interpretations.

To me the operative words in the part of the Code you cited are "starting downhill or merging into a trail." HS gives no indication that his whine is directed at skiers starting from a stop in front of him (they must have some speed going if they're making turns that take up 3/4 of the traverse) nor that it involves a trail merger with him coming in from up top.

Sometime I think people just have it out for Highwaystar and anything he says they attack...
I don't really disagree, but you omit a couple other parts of the dynamic, the trolling and the taking of the hook.
