sorry, didnt see that...

anyway, any kind of cold precip, even cold rain, is good to cool the ground down to make the base eventually stick..

i think its going to be a very warm october, followed by a cold november, the opposite of last year....

it must be cold in all layers to snow, and if there is a warm layer its sleet, and if it is warm all the way to the ground, but the ground is 32, its rain

That's not totally accurate. The surface level temperature can be warm and still have snow. I've seen it snowing at 39F.

The key factor is high level temperature, as snowflakes can only form before they develop appreciable velocity, which is what allows for the symmetrical crystal formation.

A warmer mid layer may or may not affect snowfall. If the mid layer is short and/or not significantly higher than freezing the snow flakes will stick together and form clumps, but will still fall as snow. The layer has to be long enough and warm enough to melt the falling flakes (and then subsequently refreeze) to create sleet and ice. The of course, there must be a sufficiently thick colder layer at ground level for it to fall as sleet. If it doesn't have enough time to refreeze and the ground is still cold then it becomes freezing rain.

Atmospheric temperature profiles would be handy to include in forcasts, if anyone from NOAA is listening.

And drinking it in preparation for a snow tutorial, as well, I think.

I am SOOOOOO EXITED!!! I am going absolutely crazy! Every time I go outside and the cool air hits me I crack the biggest smile! Am I the only one that still wears the T-Shirts even though he's cold? I think I do this so that it seems even colder than it actually is.

I spent 6 hours this weekend reading 2005-2006 ski reviews and specs in Powder, Skiing and the internet. I have no plans to buy new skis for another 3 years but it felt so good!

My wife was getting worried - I was warm, licking my lips, flipping from one page to another, and then back again, even took the magazines into the bathroom with me. Basically behaving the same way I behaved 10 years ago, when I got my hands on the latest Victoria's Secret magazine.

The Mount Washington Observatory set a record high yesterday at 58F, the old record was 57F in 1950.

Right now it is 56F, high temperatures like these are more typical of July

If one more person at work tells me how lucky we are to have this warm sunny weather I'm gonna snap. :puke:
That drives me crazy. You get it on the news when they report the weather also drives me crazy. Move to Florida if you don't like winters

Just wait a month. Farmer's Almanac says 5 degrres warmer than average in October and 6 degrees colder in November as well as a White Thanksgiving. Snow wouldn't do anything right now besides give you something to look at for 2 days.

In 1982, it snowed 22" in the Berkshires on this day. I'm sure they opened up for a day or 2.

Thats what I always say. Of course these same people ussually complain about the heat during the summer, so I doubt Florida would do them much good...

When I was in Maine in January of 2003, the natives were complaining about how cold it was. It got down to -17F at one point, cold but come on, it's JANUARY after all.

It was actually colder skiing at Mnt Orford, where it never got warmer than -20F with 100% sunshine
The mountain was nearly deserted, and the lady at the lift ticket window asked me if I was going to ski today????? No lady I've driven here to play golf, is my tee time available?

People are getting spoiled with warmer winters, just my .02.

Ah, the year I was born. Obviously, I'm a good omen. I'm going to go into my boss's office and do a snow dance on his desk.

I don't think so. After all, while the last couple winters haven't been huge snow winters, they have been unbelievably cold across the boards.

I remember one day on Kmart coming back to my car where the temperature on my car thermometer read -18. In the parking lot. There were several days like that last winter.

I think the problem is the influx of new blood into the area over the last 20 years. Gone are the hardy, gruff, grizzled, keep quiet or move New Englanders; arrived are the latte drinking, cell phone using, Starbucks buying, metrosexual cry babies who have nothing better to do with their free time then complain about the weather.

New England is a great outdoors area to live. With all the aformentioned softies, who used to be contained within the 495 belt but have spread outward to get back to their non existant "country roots," it's no wonder you hear all the complaining.

I can't wait for the snow.

It was -96F for a low temperature at the Amundsen Scott South Pole station yesterday, a little nippy, but it warmed all the way up to -93F, now that's better

Those temperatures are about -30F BELOW normal 8)

Mount Washington is at 59.4F, just 6 tenths of a degree away from establishing a new all time record high for the month of October, yikes.

I wonder if they will break the record. October 2-3rd both broke records.

Where is Fall????

Accuweather is comming out with there winter 2005-2006 prediction on October 10th.
