I can’t believe that I got to ride at Mammoth. Last week felt like a dream. What a way to end the season.

The Mammoth conditions were incredible. A couple of the mornings left the upper mountain a bit firm but by noon it was perfect. I had to really work on holding my tongue listening to locals talking about how "sketchy" or "icy" the conditions were. The snowpack must have been 15-20 feet (or more) which made the tree riding absolutely splendid. My friend was buddies with a local guy and he took me around and showed my places I would never have ventured into on my own. Traverses into untouched snowbowls, hiking up to spots where we could drop into fresh tree lines, steeps that I would have normally blanched at I said fuck it and came out exhilarated to be alive.
I stayed in the Inn at Mammoth and in each room and in the lobby there is the same book (kind of like the Mammoth Bible) called Tracks of Passion. It's pretty much the life story of Dave McCoy, the founder of Mammoth. In it you how the man build the lodge, cut the trails, build the lifts, built the Inn, built the gondola etc... This guy basically willed Mammoth into being, an absolutely Herculean task. Sadly you will then notice that the inn needs new carpets and paint. So does the outside of the inn and the Yodler apres bar next door. The lodge is a hodgpodge of different building styles and is also looking a bit down at the heels. The lifts are numerous and adequate but many orginal lifts remain. I hope Alterra can build on McCoys incredible achievments or at the very least polish them up a bit for the time being.
Dave McCoy is one of the legendary founders of American ski resorts. A modern mountain man. He lived to 104 and was quite robust into his late 90s! Mammoth has a strange quality about it, big enough to be a true destination mountain, but operates almost like a weekenders mountain. I agree that a good bit of the extensive infrastructure is showing age. Well known for fine late spring skiing, this year will probably go down as one of Mammoth's greatest ever for spring-summer skiing. I skied it four days in April 2022 and had a great time.

I think I read your guide two or three times before I left an I'll probably read it a couple of more times this summer. Thanks

this is a really good description. the only reason i went to mammoth was because i was visiting friends who had just moved to LA and we drove from LA. i would have prob never visited otherwise and i haven't felt too pulled to go back even tho it is objectively gigantic with some amazing skiing. in general cali is a crap-shoot for my advanced planning, but also i would almost always naturally choose reno-tahoe if i were to plan a cali trip. mammoth really does feel like a weekenders trip for LA. about the same distance/drive time of nyc to sugarbush. its always weird to me that you can ski as much as i do based in nyc out of la

I know it's been a long time since you've been there so you can subsitute another moutain (Alta, Brighton, Jackson etc..) but would you rather have all of New England or 1 western mountain of your choice 5 hours away? I think I would take Mammoth.

its more that i would take nyc over la every single day. i love skiing in new england but its my life in ny/nj that keeps me here.

i do like having the ability to choose between 5 states and quebec every single weekend. it lets me be flexible and go where there is snow, and gives me options between 2 and 8 hours away. I'm not sure how many other options exist in soCal, and the weather always seems to be feast or famine so in a bad year you're a bit fucked for driveable skiing

edited to add - in the right circumstances i would gladly live in a city like seattle, portland, san francisco, or Vancouver. if i could speak french i would love to live in Montreal but that wouldn't change my skiing much. i don't think a smaller city like reno or spokane or boise is for me with nyc as my baseline they would all feel snoozy i think. but my and my partners lives and careers, and my family, are in ny

There's a few options in SoCal.. You've got Big Bear/Snow Summit which in McSkiing but also Mountain High, Snow Valley, and Mt Baldy (Which is a bit like Magic/MRG).

Snow Valley just sold to Alterra. So I do not know if that means it is now out of the "Magic/MRG" category. I imagine it will remain the same for a little while.

I hit 60 today, 21 May 2023. @thetrailboss and I are taking advantage of the extended seasons at several Utah ski areas this spring.

I did something little crazy today just for fun. Skied in the AM at Snowbird and the PM at Solitude.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to know the details of my ski season, but the fact that I read this thread regularly, is indicative that someone really does want to know about your season, so perhaps someone want to know mine!

My compliments to anyone who is still working a full-time job who actually skis 50 or more days a year. Before I retired, that was a rarity.

Since I retired, 100+ days per season has become routine. The fact that I have a slope-side ski-on/ski-off has me skiing on many a day that I would not have even considered getting into my car.

These are my 2022-3 numbers: (I may do a day or two more, but I doubt it.)

2022-3: Nov.16, 2022 to May 12, 2023
150 days: 136 lift-serviced
118 (104 lift serviced) Crotched Mtn., 12 Sunapee, 13 Killington, 5 Okemo, 2 Mt. Snow
3.2M vertical lift serviced, averaging 23,500K per lift-served day
One day max, lift-serviced: 68,250 vertical.
Earned turns (all at CM) about 12.5K, averaging about 900 vertical per hiking event
One day max earned turns: 3K;

Very impressive on both the number of days and total vert!

By chance were you the guy who asked me in the lot if it was okay to play your (good) music?
No. But if I could have spotted you I had an extra homemade cupcake for you (carrot cake with cream cheese frosting). :p
That's what my buddy is holding in his hand.

selfie day 62 on 27 may snowbird.jpg
27 May 2023: Crazy selfie reflected in my goggles, from Snowbird, UT. This was a special day for me, #62. The most I've ever skied in one season. Part of Little Cloud Bowl can be seen behind me. It was a gorgeous morning and the spring snow skied well all over the mountain. I may get up to Snowbird the next two days and that's likely to be the conclusion of my season :-(

View downhill from same area.

I sprained my shoulder in a wipeout on April 6 and was blessed that the injury only took me out for about a week. Had to ski conservatively for a while after, but feeling close to my old, geezer self now.
