So I've seen some odd names in the past. My old stomping grounds, the Lyndon Outing Club, used to have a "Suicide" run. And there's always "Cowardly Lion" at Sunday River.

But as I was looking at Shawnee Peak's map, I noted that they have a trail that takes the prize so far:

Fat and Happy

Huh?

I think the oddest name I've ever seen, is Wilfred's Gawm, at Attitash.

I've never gotten a sensible explanation of why that trail is named that. I have 2 theories. While not terribly interesting, I shall post them forthwith. They are as follows.

When Attitash installed the summit triple in '85 or so, they went higher than the original triple, onto a slightly higher summit, in what is National Forest land. They therefore had to cut new trails, to connect with the lower mountain.

In the both scenarios there was an employee, contracter, lumberjack, what have you, named Wilfred.

Now, Crafty ol' Wilfred intentionally cut a trail against plans filed with the national forest. Hence - Wilfred's Getting Away with Murder (Papa Roach song)

Another source I found, was languagehat.com, where people were discussing the etymology of the term 'gomm', or 'gomming'.
One poster stated "In Northern New England, gawm is a mistake." Ex. Sorry, my gawm.

So, either Wilfred intentionally cut a steep and short trail, or he intended to go futher down into the valley between Attitash and Bear Peak, but was unable to do so, due to the steepness/ruggedness of the terrain.

Anyone have any info/ideas? Anyone actually give a hoot?

Jack Sprat to Fat and Happy- sprat and fat- is a great high speed crank em up get out of my way run. When the snow is good we run that combination a lot. Unfortunately fat has not been open yet this year. Don't know where the name came from though.

My favorite trail name is "Throbulator" at Burke.

After I "skied" it last year with my 9 year old daughter and her 11 year old friend, I declared that I had been "Throbulated!"

Sunappe's got some odd ones, alright. For instance, Goose Bumps is always groomed, but Flying Goose is bumped. Makes no sense. And Eggbeater. Why in the name of all that's good and holy would you name a trail "Eggbeater"?

as you are heading down Wilfred's, there is a plaque on a big boulder off to the left that explains where it got it's name. I don't recall the details, but I know the person it's named after is no longer alive. I read it once a few years back. I went down Wilfred's for the first time in years last weekend. By the time I remembered about the plaque, I was past where I think it is.

Speaking of plaques, anyone know any history behind "Chicken Farmer I Still Love You" on the way to Sunapee?

I always got a kick out of "Quacky" at MRG.

And there's a "Quacky II" and "Quacky III" also.

Makes me think of the AFLAC duck.

if not mistaken, Royal Flush at K was "oh sh**" by the locals before it was on the map. then changed to "the toilet". then when it went on the map and was properly cut it became "royal flush".

I heard a few things for what PDF at Snow stood for; Please Dont Fall - being the best.

That whole side of snowdon has become toilet names - toilet bowl, the throne, Bobbys dump, etc.

PDF=Pretty Damn Fast. (or so I have always heard it called)

Jaws at Mt. Snow used to be called Jaws of Death, that's a great run.

How about Bim's Whim at SR, that's a wacky name.

Any of the wacked Irish names at Brodie. Killarny??? lol

Jungle Road at Sunday River is one of my favorites for naming, as it was reportedly named after one of the first groomers to attempt tilling it described it as a "goddamn jungle".
