Resort or Ski Area: Okemo
Conditions: Groomed PP / occasional crust / a few icey spots, mid 30's F, partly cloudy (flat light most of the day)
Trip Report: Took my 13YO son up for the weekend and was hoping for a not-crowded event due to the big game. Okemo was running a special, all day SAT + SUN AM for $99 if you purchased online. (i didn't, i had gift certs from Christmas + a free JR pass to use).
Arrived Saturday AM to find summit quad lift on wind hold but that ended before lunch. Once open, the lifts to the top were still ran at less than full speed. I spent most of the weekend cruising groomers with Jake. If you like that sort of thing (we do) then Okemo is the place to be. Jake gets a kick out of Sachem and the other trails that run through the houses/condos. As expected, the renters/owners build little jumps and ramps just off the trail which my son loves to hit.
Saturday the lift lines were worse than expected due to the wind hold. Sunday lines were light but the trails seemed packed. All in all a good weekend skiing with my son.
Okemo was advertising bumps on Ledges, Blackout, Sel's Choice and Upper Limelight so i went looking for them on Saturday. Greg coined the term okeMOGULS so perhaps we'll see that on a billboard soon . Here are a few shots I took to give you a sense of what they had. The light was pretty flat Saturday so it is hard to make out all the detail, sorry.
Yes, they have bumps!!
I liked Ledges the best. I'm not much of a bumper but found Ledges have a good line and the snow was nice. Didn't feel any ice. It looked like they were settign up for a race. there was a flat section 1/2 down which would probably be for kickers.
Blackout was OK. Slightly larger bumps and a bit icey and i couldn't find a line i could handle.
Sel's CHoice was about the same as Blackout but perhaps a little nicer. i didn't fall and was able to find a decent line about 1/2 down.
Upper Limelite was the worst of the bunch to me. A. it was very short and B the bumps were tight and icey.
If you are looking for a bumpy day, perhaps Okemo isn't for you. If you want a mix of cruising and bumping, you can probalby find it there.
If you ever hear of "The Plunge" getting seeded it might be worth a visit. I was there last spring and it was very bumpy and a lot of fun.
