Oppions on Stratton lessons

I'm planning on going up to Stratton for 3 days midweek next week (I get a healthy discount there with my Mt. Creek pass); and I was considering trying a private lesson.

I ski on the cheap pretty much, I was curious if anyone had any opinions of the quality of their instructors before I shell out 75 to 90 dollars for an hour. If it matters I consider myself an advanced intermediate. I can ski steep terrain confidently but don't have enough confidence for steep bumps.

Also I have not taken a lesson since before I was in high school. Is it appropriate to give a tip for a private lesson? If so how much is appropriate?

Midweek for an advanced intermediate, you might get more bang for your buck with an afternoon group lesson since the odds are high that it will end up being a private or semi-private. Most people take lessons in the morning so your odds for one-on-one for cheap are better in the afternoons. Midweek, you're also getting the full time professional instructors rather than the weekend warriors so the quality is likely to be much better.

Ski instructor is a minimum wage job. $20.00 for an hour of private if you're getting quality instruction.

If you book a private I’d ask for a recently certified level III. The afternoon group lesson suggestion is worth considering. You won’t have any control over who you get but you’d typically getter higher level instructors in higher level lessons. And, it would likely be a very small group. If you get a good lesson by all means tip the instructor. And if you’re basically getting a private for a group lesson rate, consider tipping even more. Instructors often get paid more for a private than a group lesson, and they often are paid more for a requested private.

like tipping at a resturant, 10% ok- 15%if instructor took time with you and you felt he helped you out-20% great time and learned a lot and you felt you received the personal touch. afternoon group lesson can be a bargain, one or two people, also look for the class with no one and a good instructor{ get names at ski school of level 2 or 3 instructos} instructors wear name tags.
