Trip Report:
Dirt_girl and I had originally planned to bag Owl's Head today, but the threat of rain persuaded us to make other plans. She wanted a loop hike with multiple peaks, and I wanted to stay away from brooks likely to flood if it rained hard. Passaconaway and Whiteface seemed like obvious targets. Besides these are peaks we both needed for our 4000 footer collections. The Dicey Mill's trail has plenty of steps, something dirt_girl isn't overly found of, but she got passed them with the help of some colorful adjectives. :D

After bagging the treed in summit of Passaconawy we proceeded across the Rollins trail to the (true) summit of Whiteface. The tiny cairn was barely noticeable so we spent about 20 minutes collecting stones and building it up. Then we headed for the cliffs of Mt. Whiteface.

The south cliffs of Whiteface made this hike well worth the effort. The sky was very cloudy, but the clouds were well above the summits and the views were fantastic. I climbed around on the cliffs and we explored the surrounding area, then headed for the Blueberry Ledge Trail. After reading the description of this trail in the AMC guide ("It is particularly difficult on the descent"), we wondered just what we had got ourselves into, but to our surprise it proved no more difficult that many other ledgey trails and the views were great. All and all it was an excellent hike.

Note: Dirt_girl suffered her first hiking related (minor) injuries towards the end of this hike. I told her the blood might attract bears but she didn't seem concerned, then I remembered, she's faster than me going down hill. :D

Great hike and trip report. Certainly a safer hike than Owl's Head in the rain we had all day.

And I stayed home to avoid the rain!
