This weekend was warm and springlike so inevitably things had to firm up, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for racing. Met up with BobR, skibum9995, hammer, and non-board member KM around 530. The Pats staff worked their way through a bit of the usual first night jitters (bib/pass isn't printed you need a wicket ticket, oh wait they're printed, no only some are... ). Still didn't take very long to get set up and on the hill. A few quick runs on the east side and a line was already forming up top for sign up. Mondays have gotten busy, must have been about 100 people total!
Race was on FIS. The Pats crew did a nice job setting up: fresh groom, fence skiers left the entire run for Bob, and the start had been packed out. The green course was pretty much a straight shot: pretty easy compared to what I recall from years past. Yellow had the typical hike across the hill for the first gate and a couple trickier gates (eg top of a knoll) but still pretty straightforward.
Had my first run on green, took too straight a line on #2 which meant I skidded through #3. Fortunately there's still enough pitch there I recovered and ended up with a decent time (19.67 sec, handicap 19.07). Running 11th surfaces were still somewhat soft from the groom - just right for my lack of ability and dull edges.
BobR and skibum9995 ran together. skibum9995 was probably too round and conservative first run as I beat him on green (19.9 sec) After a couple years off BobR put up the best points run for the team right off the bat on yellow: a 20.26 sec run, 14.66 handicap combined with the old man bonus brought us 8.57 pts.
KM and hammer ran next: KM put up a great green run right away: 20.42 sec for a 23.61 handicap and 7.92 pts. It's great to have a ripping female on the team this year! hammer is new to racing this year and made it through both courses capably. No doubt he'll improve with more time in the gates.
Second run was firm with small ruts building up - I pretty much skidded my way through the yellow course and put up an unremarkable time. I think most of the team was similar - only skibum9995 had a better second run putting up a 20.13 on yellow for a 13.92 handicap and 7.78 pts. for the team.
We took a couple more runs on the east side before hitting the bar, which was packed! After fluffing a couple bowls of popcorn over to a table behind the bar we scored a table in the center of the room and hung out 'til after results, throwing back a couple. Results weren't sorted by individual score. Some really good teams this year - we came in 9th with avg score of 6.4.

It was great to get out and meet a couple new folks, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!
If anyone is interested, we're still looking for a couple more team members - KM will miss next week and it sucks to average in a 0!
