Resort: Pico Mountain

Date Skied: 3/4/06 12:30pm - 4pm

Conditions: Snow, some wind, around 28 degrees

Trip Report:
I had a craving to go back to Pico after they have been receiving some snow. I pulled into a packed lot and ended up parking in the lot by the entrance. I booted up and walked to the lodge. As I approached the mountain I realized that most of the crowds were for races going on today. While riding up the Golden Quad, I could not help but notice the fresh snow on the trails. It looked like a good 6 inches had fallen and the snow continued throughout the day.

I exited the lift and made my descent down Fool's Gold to the Summit Express Quad. The freshly falling snow was an awesome blessing, but if you dig to deep you found the boiler plate! My first run down from the summit was the 49er trail which is an intermediate. The upper part had a lot of scraped off snow and the ice was revealing its ugly self. As I got down to the ½ way part there was more snow and the conditions were a lot better.

I took the Upper Pike (lift line trail) which had some nice fresh snow under the lift and on the right (if you were skiing down) and then the next 20 feet I would find boiler plate. Again as you got down ½ way there was much less boiler plate to be found.

I liked the KA trail. Even though the top part was scarped, the mid was fun. I even took the lower part which had the "thin cover" sign. It was not to bad and actually kind of a fun run. I even found an intermediate called Sunset Schuss" which the entrance was off of the Lower Pike trail. This also had thin cover and looked to be all natural snow. The trails I skied from the Summit were the KA, Pike, Sunset 71 and 49er. I took the Birch Glades trail down a couple of times. I did not wander into the trees though. There a some tree islands here and there on that trail.

I do have to say I really enjoy Pico. I like their narrow twisty terrain with the pitch. Even though I only skied the trails from the summit and ending at the Summit Express, these are all fairly long. I did not get bored with any of the terrain. I hope to make it back before they close for the season.

We were going to go there on Sat, but opted out, thinking the it was going to be all wind blown with the boiler plate your talking about....kinda wished we went, but then.....I hate boiler plate! I'm sure the bottom half would be better though. We've never been to Pico and wanted to check it out this year, but who knows, we still may before season is over....I don't know though, it may be a short season this year.
