Area skied: Pico Mountain Vermont
Date skied: March 10th, 2007 from 9:30am-1:30pm
Surface conditions: Packed powder, wetpacked snow.
Today was the first time that I have skied at Pico since January of 2002 and I wanted to get in a day before the new owners change the place for better or worse so a return visit was long overdue and we picked a fairly nice day to ski the mountain. Warren and I started off with a ride up the Golden Express HSQ and down Fools Gold to the Summit Express HSQ which had no liftline at 9:45am.
Our first run off the summit was on Summit Glades/Summit Glade West and the trail had delighful packed powder snow with nice small practice bumps for Warren to enjoy. Next up was Forty Niner which was skied off and scratchy in spots and my son took a fall but was able to get back up by himself as he is now able to recover on his own.
Upper and Lower Sunset 71 has mass quantities of loose powder snow on the trail edges and was fun to ski especially with the u shape that the upper part of the trail has. Upper and Mid KA was much the same with a bit more hardpacked snow and a more narrow feel.
By 11:30am the sun had faded behind the increasing cloud cover moving in from the west and a few rain drops had started to fall, honestly we thought that the sky would open up at any moment but this was not to be as the rain held off an some peaks of sun started to reaper.
It took alot of convincing on my part to get Warren to ski down Upper Pike due to the large area of hardpacked snow and ice in the middle of the trail, but he did enjoy skiing the moguls that where found on both edges of the trail and we continued on to Birch Glades which had snow the skied like cream cheese as the temperature had risen and the snow was soft and sticky.
I took a run alone on Upper Giant Killer which had alot of rocks, bare spots, and saplings to avoid, especially on the steep upper part of the trail, but the lower part has plenty of cover and big soft moguls.
Warren and I skied to the Outpost Chair and we skied Sidewinder together with soft moguls and plenty of cover. Bronco was much the same, but I skied it alone while Warren skied Stampede/Expressway.
On the drive up we took the route 100 route past the Skyship Gondola at Killington which my son has not riden on before and he asked me if we could ski it before we left for home, so we where back at Killington at 2:00pm for one run down Cruise Control/Great Eastern and a small part of Velley Plunge. This is quite a long run and the snow was soft and sticky, but the trail was fairly empty and the Skyship had only a 2-3 minute wait due to the delay caused by scanning lift tickets.
