I'm looking at the guy on the far right, downhill tuck and airborne. Maybe they better have those saftey nets on the steepest portions, to save someone who might wipe-out, from going into the trees.

That's a crazy pic, hey? That's Bill Linscott. In 1942, he was a 16 year old Adams sophomore and won the Mass. State Downhill on the Thunderbolt. He went on to serve in the 10th Mtn Div. during WWII. A local Thunderbolt legend for sure...

Very cool patch arrived yesterday. Much bigger than I imagined. Summertime task: sew it onto my backpack for trail maint and race hiking. Danger level: extremely high. Much more dangerous than racing the 'bolt on woodies. Potential outcomes: puncture wounds, loss of blood, in some cases, trauma.

Super Highway

Yes, the Super Highway is skinable. But there will be all kinds of volunteers on the trail as well, so it might be well traveled and boot-packed.

Which trail is the Super Highway? I would use Bellows Pipe as a way up in the past.

The Super Highway leaves the Greylock Glen from the Gould Farm. It is a most direct route up the mountain located south of the landslides.

The reason we are not using Bellows Pipe is because we can not have racers walking UP, as racers are coming DOWN at any point.

The trail is not going to be groomed in any way. It will be maintained throughout the year. And we will probably pack it in some way in the weeks before the race. But not groomed.

And yes, we have had some preliminary communications with a few film companies about documenting the race. Of course I am biased, but I do thing it would make a perfect human interest film.

Racer Registration opens Columbus Day (October 12th).

If you want to help, but not race, there are plenty of opportunities.

This fall we will work on the top third of the trail. We received permission from the State DCR to cut all that spruce just below the Thunderbolt Ski Shelter. Yes, registration opened on Columbus day. Max. 120 racers...and the slots are filling fast. We are going to close registration on Dec. 31st, but at this rate the 120 slots will be long gone by then.
