Quebec (Tremblant) President's Day? Normal weekend crowd or holiday crowd?

Tremblant has a variety of trails for all levels . it is unique in the Northeast for the ambiance and altho not exactly Continental in vibe it is the closest thing to it in North America . Love or or hate it it is different from New England skiing and certainly more challenging than the Pokes , or stuff in the Middle Atlantic region . Is it Whiteface ...no it lacks the vert but like Lake Placid or N Conway it is a fun place with a unique vibe .

Go , enjoy , dont let the negative nuts sway you at all . just bring warm gear it can get colder than a well diggers butt

While this is true, Quebec (though more around Quebec City, but a little bit in Tremblant too) is a distinctly different feel compared to the US/New England.

While not necessarily a Euro feel, the ambiance/aesthetic of a lot of the restaurants and on mountain eateries, like the shack on the casino side, are not replicated in New England ski areas, IMO.

I'm not deterred by the naysayers. I'm going there late next week and part of the President's weekend.

Skied at Gore today on my way up. Got slushy late in the day. Will be nasty once frozen tomorrow. Hope some part of Tremblant escape that.

Which aspect does Edge face? (it's easy to figure which way south/north faces...)

Perhaps the EDGE pod is a NE orientation but more E ....... Too bad you caught Gore on a meh day weather wise ....its a really fun place an annual must do for me.

The Edge faces just about east as does the North and the South faces mostly west or south of west. Le Soliel almost faces south.

I have skied it at 20 below zero Fahrenheit no lie. ! Frankly was one of the best days ever for me , snow was pristine , not many out . We skied the NORD all day that day .Our group of 30 have been going up there for years . normally i wouldnt bother at 20 below but we were. Already up there so we sucked it up and i was glad we did . The only concession was we would hit the top lodge about every hr for hot chocolates ;-)

Keeping warm was the least of my problems. Condition was very marginal.

It rained there all day yesterday. Fine misty drizzle all day long till the wee hours. So they couldn't even groom till the morning, at which point it froze solid. They opened with only half of the trails, continue the grooming throughout the day. Unfortunately, I didn't get the story till midday. So I was slip-sliding on the groomers and wondering what trail to do next since the one I was on sucked.

Had i knew they were opening trails gradually, I would have paid more attention to which one was newly opened. I did get a few of them by chance, which was quite nice. I would go back for 2nd time, by the 3rd time the groomed top layer would got scraped off, and it became another of those tilted skating rings.

The other thing I didn't quite get is what time they close the which lift. I came down to the bottom at 3:45 but the bottom lift was closed already. :angry:

Yes, the French language is prevalent in Quebec - by law. All I was saying was that the culture of Quebec itself is quite distinct from the culture in France, even if the language is the same.

It's kind of like saying Massachusetts is real British culture. Just because it might have been in the 1700's, it is no longer the case.

ah, while i do agree with you that quebec is quite distinct from france, many quebecoise would probably disagree with you that it is just the language.

also, 'prevalent' is an understatement. you may be ok not speaking french in Montreal or some of the busy tour spots, but french is their main language. one time on my way to mt. ste. anne i got lost outside of quebec city. those local did not speak english at all or they were at least pretending to not.

I can assure you that I’ve spent MUCH more time in Quebec than you have. But thanks for the lesson. Hopefully the drive from New Jersey isn’t too taxing.

Skied today , got an early start with first tracks and skied to the end trying to get as much in before the 3 days of rain forecasted. While the skiing was good today, most double blacks were closed. There is very little base and it did get skied off in places. Not enough snow in the woods. Mash potatoes at the bottom near the gondola by noon time so we stayed higher up. Crowds weren't bad but we avoided the bottom during busy times. Blue and green trails did look crowded but we avoided them. We had a great day and are here till Friday . We are hoping that its snow higher up and not all rain.

I was there Friday-sunday, and yea, the skiing was kinda shite. tremblant was so close to the rain/no rain line. such a bummer. just super hard packed, but they did a good job getting the mountain back open, and they kept the glades open with a ski it if you can/at your own risk policy. I had some ok tree skiing. definitely firm tho. the only stuff they did not open were the double blacks under TVG.

was quite a bummer seeing a powder day happen in Vermont on sunday not making its way far north

but we had a blast. this was a trip with my non skier girlfriend and two other couples, so skiing was really secondary to just spending time and having fun. we stayed in a gorgeous small bnb/hotel with delicious food and a nice outdoor hot tub and very friendly deer. I won $300 in tremblant casino, and $600 in montreal casino. we spent sunday brewery and bar hopping montreal, ate a great dinner, ended at casino. got st viateur bagels yesterday and was back in NYC by 6:30 pm.

all in all a success since the skiing was secondary to the experience this time around

Friday was really pretty awful. Definitely "good for you" kind of snow. I went xc skiing on Saturday. Others staying at the B&B reported poor condition and maddening crowd. Sunday was good. Much less crowd, better condition. So much so I stayed till lift closing, made for a super-late arrival back home.

Some pictures too, though half of them upside down.

I'm down about the same amount as what you've won. (I used to enjoy a bit of casino gambling, but for some reason I don't find it fun any more. Weird)

Yea, I got after it pretty hard from 10:30-4 on Friday, and it definitely wasn't pretty. Saturday was indeed packed. Sunday I hit it hard from 830-1030 for 10k vert before it got packed. It really does get so crowded at tremblant, especially on holiday weekends.

Winning the entire cost of the trip and then some in the casino certainly takes the bite out of lackluster skiing.

And skiing with friends is fun, always. If this was a solo trip I'd be very bummed by the crowds and snow. But id never plan a solo trip to tremblant on a holiday weekend

Though as a solo skier, I wasn't as affected by the crowd thanks to single's line. (trying to negotiate joining a chair without knowing french was a bit challenging though).

I used to hit casinos whenever I get a chance. I enjoyed it and had decent luck on the outcome. But after my Dad retired from his engineering firm, he went to work for a casino. My luck had since gone downhill, which took a lot of the fun out of it.

I haven't been to the Montreal Casino in YEARS.

The only game I ever play in any casino is blackjack, and of course they count in French there, makes you feel like you're in a James Bond film.

Tremblant casino is small. Slots, video poker, a few table games. I lost $20 fast on video poker and then found my friends on the roulette table. We made a lot of the same bets and all hit on single number bets a bunch. I won $300. Friend won $100. His girlfriend won $600

Montreal casino is big. Girlfriend taught me craps, which I never bothered to understand before. I get it now. I was a hot roller twice, hit like 4 11s in a row on the come out roll. I had the dice for a long time, and some dude won like $7500 on my rolls and tossed me $100. I started with $40 of chips that I never lost and turned into $600
