My sister and her family are buying a place up at Gore, so I may be taking a few trips over from the Boston area to check things out this winter. I have a few questions that I'm sure someone in this crowd will be able to answer:

1) They are buying new cell phones, any idea which has the best coverage up there?
2) Drive times from Boston? Best route?
3) How's the mountain for glades and OOB terrain? How do they feel about leaving the ski area terrain?
4) Is there any tele scene around?
5) Any good backcountry nearby?

Thanks,

-dave-

1) I can't remember having problems with Verizon there, but then it has been a few years I think since I've been there, so I could be totally mistaken. Before that I skied their regularly.

2) I'm not from Boston, but my guess would be to take I-90 to I-87 (NYS Thruway) to Exit-24 (I-87/Adirondack Northway) to Exit-25 (Chestertown) to Route 8 west. Then unfortunately I don't know the names of the roads but know by landmarks. It is only a couple minutes drive from the turn off Route 8. Going from landmarks, you will see a firegap cut into the trees, and you'll make a right. Then you'll make a fairly sharp left very soon. Then the Gore entrance is on the right. Terrible directions, I know. Sorry.

(Alternatively you can get off Exit-23 of the Northway. I think that's probably not as good, but when I skied at Gore I was coming from about 10 miles north of Lake George Village so that I would get on the Northway at Exit-24 and take it one exit north.)

3) Good for glades, if there is snow. Doesn't get the snow of the VT resorts, so the glades aren't open or covered as much. They also have some backcountry trails that are marked. I haven't done them though. I think they might have some flat portions. The non-marked glades are supposed to be good too, but I have only done one once probably. I don't know anything about out-of-bounds terrain as opposed to within bounds but off the marked trails. From what I've heard, the ski patrol is not especially fond of people leaving trails for unmarked glades, but others can probably help you better.

4) I have never telemarked, but I can say that on any given day I may only see a couple telemarkers at most at the ski area.

I'd recommend that you pose the exact same question at skiadk.com's Gore forum.

I have Verizon too and can always get service from the summit, but is in and out on other parts of the mountain.

Kcyank is pretty much right on. When they have snow the glades are great and they have some of the best liftline skiing in the NE.

I never thought of it before, but you don't see a whole lot of tele skiers at Gore, they're all over the place at Whiteface.
