Resort or Ski Area: Ragged

Conditions: Hardpack, groomed frozen granular, bright sun, cold (20s)

Trip Report: Good day at Ragged yesterday considering the weather. Basically similar conditions that were reported last week with edgeable hardpack and frozen granular in the AM and scraped sections in the PM. A bit busy (think because of the 2 for 1 special) but the lift lines were manageable. Run of the day for us was Exhibition. They made snow on Birches (black to skiers left of the six pack) but not enough to open yet.

Flying Yankee was closed for races again. I took a run down Showboat after lunch but it wasn't pretty...has hard for me to set an edge on the steeper section so I bailed on turns and straightlined it down. Got away with it because the trail was empty...

May have been the fast conditions but for some reason Ragged skied smaller to me yesterday. May be that we are taking more trips to Loon so we are used to bigger ski areas.

RFID system worked fine for us but they should change the sound made when the pass isn't accepted (I left thinking an ambulance was pulling up in the parking lot). They also allowed you to turn the card in at the end of the day and get a refund of the $5 fee.

Wish they wouldn't close Yankee but with Upper and Lower Ridge open I suppose that's not too bad. That slick drop at Showboat has been there since they opened it. Probably won't improve without a decent snow storm - but time is running out. Even then it will be slick underneath. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out in the spring.

Ragged skis big when you're taking a glade every run. All groomers shrinks anyplace down.
Fast groomers just do it even more...

If the snow was good I'd be back there for sure...looked over from the Spear triple and the woods looked like they would be fun.

Also there on Sunday and I second all of hammer's points although I didn't try Showboat because I was with my wife and I didn't think she would be into it. Had a very nice day.

Two gripes:

Second Sunday in a row that they have closed Flying Yankee for races. I guess I can see why but being as it is one of my favorites at Ragged it is sort of annoying.

Also, Headwall has to be one of the most foolish trails I have ever seen. Who needs a fairly steep 150 ft log run that empties into an already crowded intersection. Yesterday it was a sheet of ice festooned with a steady stream of gapers hurtling toward the goat rodeo assembled where four trails merge.
