Trip Report: There’s almost nothing sweeter than skiing in a tee shirt and shorts. I didn’t got as far as shorts on Sunday but I did wear only long tee with the sleeves rolled up. The snow was nothing less than wet slop but with my recently waxed Chubbs this was not a problem. As a matter of fact I had a blast. The Chubbs either chopped up the wet bumps or plowed through the manky wet snow without a hitch. Definitely a wide ski rules in wet snow as long as they are waxed. What was also interesting was the alternating waves of cool and warm air as I skied down.
Most of the trails with snow making were open for both days. Very little was left of the natural cover. On Saturday the clouds stuck around to keeps temps to the mid 50’s. The Spear, however, triple was closed for maintenance by the time I got there (around 1:30). Also Headwall developed a huge gap across its face and was closed. Birches, Exhibition, Upper and Lower Ridge, Upper and Lower Chute, Wild Side, Main Street and Village Green all skied wonderfully.
On Sunday the Spear triple was running so I took a run each on Showboat and Flying Yankee. Even with the full sun and mid 70’s temps the trails and snow were identical both days.
I asked a ski patrol what the prognosis was for the coming week and he said they probably would not open for the week and next weekend is up in the air. With a week of temps in the upper 70’s I gotta think it don’t look good but I’m hoping for one more shot. If not it could be my only opportunity to hike up for earned turns.
