Date(s) Skied: Sunday January 16, 2011
Ski Area: Ragged Mountain - Danbury, NH
Conditions: Machine groomed packed powder and tracked out powder snow.
Trip Report:
Great first day spent on the slopes of Ragged today. Drove up yesterday evening with the Lady and crashed in Tilton. It ended up being a nasty drive with the light snow that was falling and accumulating for most of the trip but with a stop for dinner and a nice bottle of wine that was enjoyed upon arrival, the many miles spent toiling behind a never ending slew of bad drivers and the gallons of washer fluid used seemed to vanish with the prospect for some sweet turns and I fell into a deep peaceful sleep.
Woke up around 7:30 this morning; quickly showered, dressed, hit Dunkin and headed for Ragged arriving around 8:30 and managed to score a stellar parking spot 50 yards from the front steps. Sweet!
Got booted up, grab a lift ticket (yet another CT Ski Council awareness day - $40.00 today) and in the process met up with and chatted with an old family friend I've know for 30 some years. The day was off to a great start.
Headed right for the 6-pack and being the first time at Ragged started on skiers right and worked the groomers across the hill and then went back around to sample some of the natural snow trails and some woods. Although the snow on the natural stuff and in the woods was definitely thin and can use some solid base snow, I loved the terrain. For a medium sized mountain this place packs punch for sure.
Lift lines at the 6-pack where no more than 3 minutes today and with the speed of the lift I managed to make a ton of runs and log around 15,000 feet of vertical. Surprisingly even with such a high capacity lift the trails on this side of the mountain did not get overcrowded even with the somewhat limited terrain.
There was a race today over on Flying Yankee so with the speed of the lift and the one trail that was open (and skiable without trashing your boards) only made one run over on Spear Mtn today. Regardless with a little more snow, I might have to make a another trip to explore some of the goods I saw and was not able to ski today!
Definitely had a great day at Ragged today! Totally enjoyed the vibe and kept having to remind myself it was a holiday weekend.
