Resort or Ski Area: Ragged Mountain

Conditions: Packed Powder, Frozen Granular, Au Natural Bumps (really!)

Trip Report:

Grabbed the kids for a day trip to Ragged after seeing they had opened up Lower Ridge and Raggae Glade after the recent snow.

Pulled into the second row at 8:30 and were on the 6 pack by 9:15. (The 6 Pack and Barnyard Triple were turning. They were blowing snow over on Cardigan.)

The crowd slow built during the day, but it never felt super crowded and the longest wait for the 6 Pack was 5 minutes.

Upper and Lower Exhibition were crowd favorites. And it showed by noon as it started to get scratchy in spots. But soft spots were to be found on the edges of the trail. Some brave souls were venturing in the not quite covered enough Exhibition Glades.

Lower Chute ultimately got scratchy too, but Village Green and Town Meeting were nice and soft most of the day. Also the terrain park run was a blast. Lots of snow over there and being protected by the trees, nothing had blown off in the prior two post blizzard days. No - their big man made stone jumps were not open. But plenty of jumps were built down the middle of the trail.

The real story, though, was Lower Ridge, Raggae Glades, and Pines. All three of these blues were thinly covered in spots, but this was because it was only natural snow on these. And they were all bumped up. Plenty of moguls and bump lines had formed across all three runs. Blown powder spots (top of the boot) were found on skiers right. It would be fantastic if Ragged kept these runs as bump runs! No idea what their plans are. Based on nothing but the character of the trails and what they did last year, I would bet they ultimately groom Lower Ridge and Pines and keep Raggae Glade bumped up.

On Tuesday their site indicated the black runs Cemetary Gate, Birches and Sweepstakes was open. These were roped off yesterday. Must have been blown off by the wind.

Otherwise just the usual. Good vibe. Nice lodge. Relatively no crowd for a holiday week. No hassle parking. Good pizza and even Ragged All Star Evelyn was out running the 6 Pack before noon. (and the moose was running around for the kids too)

We will be back.

Nice

Don't recall Reggae being groomed last year. Lower Ridge and Pines most certainly will be due to their popularity with the groomer crowd. I have to admit, even as a bump fanatic, I do enjoy ripping Lower Ridge.

Mid - lower Chute definitely always get beat up. I made the suggestion last year that they should blow snow and groom Birches. I think doing so would draw some traffic away from the Chute side of the hill and would preserve the overall snow conditions better. I know many like that it's all natural, but the bumps on it suck all year. Sweepstakes is pretty much the same trail and I think if you condensed the skiers looking for bumps onto that one trail instead of both it and Birches, better bumps would form. So overall, grooming Birches would make the mountain better for both the groomer crowd and the bump crowd.

Hopefully things don't melt out too bad over Friday and Saturday. I plan on being up there on Sunday and hope to get to enjoy Reggae Glades. If they get Cardigan open as well I'd image some of the glades off it will be pouchable as the wind blows the snow off the ridge into that area, so its probably fairly deep in there.

Nice report! Glad you and your fam had fun.

I'm not a zipper-line bump skier and actually prefer the variety of irregular bumps on natural snow - seems more challenging to me in terms of spot decision-making. Am I alone in this? I realize I may be rationalizing given that I simply don't have the skills/physical ability/experience/whatever to zipper a symmetrical bump line with any kind of style or grace.

From my relatively limited experience at Ragged I like having both Sweepstakes and Birches as is - though better still is when the Ravine is open and Rags to Riches gets bumped up.

Irregular bumps can be fun no doubt. I just know I'd like to have at least one great zipper bumper run. Every mountain should have one. It's all it takes to shut someone like me up ;)

My thought on Birches as a groomer is more to take pressure off some of the other groomers and improve overall snow quality on the mountain.
