Resort or Ski Area: Ragged Mountain

Conditions: PP on groomed, PP & some chowder on ungroomed, still a good number of boot-deep freshies to be found in the woods and on certain trail edges. Cloudy all day but light wasn't too flat, cold in a.m. warming to around 30 by late in the day.

Trip Report: GLADES! With nearly 100% of terrain open Ragged has some phenonemal woods runs for skiers like me and my older son and his friend who don't have a lot of experience in glades but now find ourselves capable of navigating sometimes sketchy/steep entrances and whatever followed. We hit several runs in the Ravine multiple times and had a blast. The first drop into Rags to Riches was quite boney but ultimately passable; Pel's Pass (one of a handful of trails at Ragged marked with signs but not on the trail map) was a less-trafficked entrance to RtoR, off Sweepstakes. Another entrance to the Ravine off upper Showboat (not on the map unless it was "Ragged Edge" was narrow but also had good snow, not skied off. Also, as last Sunday, extensive untracked to boot deep along the edges of Easy Winder and this time the access via Big Rock had much better cover (Ragged reported 14" Wednesday). Great natural cover on the blacks Birches and Sweepstakes (except for some scratch at the top of the latter).

A few times we encountered a fair number of other skiers/riders in the Ravine but crowds weren't bad all in all despite a Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge. Hat's off to the "traffic cop" at the six pack who made sure no chair went up with fewer than five people on it -- she was no-nonsense and got the job done.

Now that the base is there I think this place has real potential in a powder dump.

Again no pix and I'm too whipped to even have checked out the video yet.

I also thought she was great! The best lift line traffic cop I have ever seen too.

I'm thinking of hitting Ragged up Saturday with my son. Will be his first time out this year so he might only last til' noon. Think conditions will hold up through the week? I love the woods and un-groomed......
