some good old school death metal/punk to get things started.

They aren't progressive. (and not really death metal) Though I do like testament quite a bit.

also try going to pandora.com. very cool site that will open up worlds of music that you may not have heard. i'm listening right now.

Hmm... how about something like "Echoes" and "One of the Days" by Pink Floyd without singing for an entire album. Does anything like that exist? If so it would be the greatest music ever.

Darn... I guess I'll just stick to listening to Meddle then some Joe Satriani.

I have listened to some more Yes today and would have to say that it is quite good. I always thought Yes was just some cheesy 80's band because of "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Also, I'm listening to Emerson, Lake, and Palmer right now and it is quite awesome.

I can think of some Jethro Tull tunes that might fit the bill as progressive compositions with minimal vocals.

Thick as a Brick (long version) is one...

And, if you're listening to Satriani, why not pop in some Steve Vai... if you want to go for out there then get Flex-able.

If you like Satriani's soaring/sonic guitar, give Larry Carlton's last album a listen. For Tull, I'd think of "A Passion Play" as more "progressive".

I just discovered Porcupine Tree (their album "Stupid Dream" is really good); Last.fm lists similar artists as Rush, Pink Floyd, Tool and King Crimson, so I think this band would be right up the alley for a lot of responders in this thread

Bump. I just listened to almost every recommendation in this thread. Some pretty cool stuff. Jeff Beck is quite funky and cool, sounds a lot like Primus. Steve Vai rules, basically a heavier Satriani. Still nothing that I find amazing though. In my opinion Opeth and Pink Floyd are just on another level that no progressive band can touch.

With Primus or solo stuff? Never heard any solo stuff by him, but I have listened to a fair amount of Primus, which is quite awesome.

I have tried so hard to get into this band, but for some reason I still don't like them. They are always compared to Opeth and Pink Floyd, but I really can't see any similarities. You would think I could at least listen to something that is compared to my two favorite bands, but there is just something I can't stand about their music. I still have hope that I can like them...

Awesome video. I'm talking about his solo stuff, particularly Frog Brigade. "One Better" is a great tune.

Something progressive. It can be basically anything that doesn't have a crappy verse/chorus 3x + solo at end format. It just has to be awesome. The heavier the better, but some soft stuff could be good too. Right now I'm really digging Opeth, Necrophagist, Pink Floyd, and Rush to give an idea what I like.

How about Spirit of Radio by Rush,
and for some heavy drums, when the levee breaks by led zeppelin

and i don't know if you are into system of a down, but metro is a good unreleased song
