some good old school death metal/punk to get things started.
also try going to pandora.com. very cool site that will open up worlds of music that you may not have heard. i'm listening right now.
Does anything like that exist?
Not Exactly....
Oysterhead
I have heard one of their songs and REALLY dig it!! I need to find more...I just discovered Porcupine Tree (their album "Stupid Dream" is really good); Last.fm lists similar artists as Rush, Pink Floyd, Tool and King Crimson, so I think this band would be right up the alley for a lot of responders in this thread![]()
Have you tried Les Claypool's stuff at all, Austin?

With Primus or solo stuff? Never heard any solo stuff by him, but I have listened to a fair amount of Primus, which is quite awesome.
I just found this on youtube though and it is very very cool.

Something progressive. It can be basically anything that doesn't have a crappy verse/chorus 3x + solo at end format. It just has to be awesome. The heavier the better, but some soft stuff could be good too. Right now I'm really digging Opeth, Necrophagist, Pink Floyd, and Rush to give an idea what I like.
