OK, my Jansport Ruck is beginning to go :(

I bought it in 1996 for $45 at EMS. It has 2900 Cu. Inch Capacity and I love it. Compression straps work well and it has a couple nice pockets for a water bottle and for gloves/mitts on the top.

Do you have any good recommendations for a replacement? Preferably a ruck sack that is about the same size. Lately the ones I've seen are about 2000 or less  I don't mind techy, but I want something that is within budget. (Under $100 or so).

It is used for skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, travel, and school. Needs to hold a lot of weight.

I think the Marmot Eiger might suit your needs...

I have one in large I think it runs around 2400CU IN...set up to carry skis diagonally and ice axes traditioanlly, all in all nice pack and I don't think you can go wrong with Marmot.

I use the Dakine Poacher for year round use. 2300 in^3. Bought mine on sale so it was under $100. Also added a year round hydration unit to it...awesome combo.

Hmmm....no other recommendations?

I saw some decent sized and priced models at EMS and LL Bean. Any experience with those names?

I posted a review awhile ago about that Jansport GosHawk 40. Nice pack, around 2400 cu.in, has pockets and straps for skis, internal frame. Got it for about $50 at Campmor. It was on sale forever, but I haven't seen them advertised lately. Maybe all gone? It may pop up again in the spring.

Max has been pretty happy with his Kelty Redwing, as far as I know.

So I've been looking at the Kelty Redwing. They had the right size at EMS last night, but wrong color. I can get it for 30% off. My only concern are the zippers on it. No probs? Looked like a well-built piece though overall. Had ski straps on it.

i have the redwing and the zippers have been fantastic. my pack is five or six years old though, they may have switched to inferior product since then to save money perhaps? my pack has certainly taken a beating and no problems. used it for my first few forays into the backcountry ski world before getting a dedicated backcountry oriented pack.

can't go wrong for 30% off!
