Date Skied: 1/15/11
Ski Area: Saddleback Maine
Conditions: Groomed trails, Powder woods
Trip Report:
As we drove in on a COLD morning, the sun was shining, there was no wind and the skies were clear.
They recently reported 20" from the storm, so we wanted to check it out during a blackout day from SR/SL. Walking from the car the snow was squeaky cold.
There was also visible snowmaking in progress, and we later found out it was on TIGHT LINE, but that trail was closed all day.
Lines were short at the Rangeley double early in the day. So, I took advantage and did a couple top to bottom runs on Grey Ghost to get warmed up. The skier's left of the trail was closed for race training, but everything else was smooth, groomed and fast.
My son left to ski with a friend so I became a single on the Kennebago quad. Noticed lots of snow on the trees on the way up and I was hoping for good conditions to the left on the "Kennebago Steeps." However, most of the diamond and double diamond trails were closed from the top, and all looked very wind blown.
The SB trail report said most were open but only Black Beauty and Muleskinner were open from the top traverse.
Casablanca had lots of powder in the woods and plenty of untracked runs. Entrance #1 and #2 were almost untracked. Later I went over to #4 and it seemed to have been cleared a LOT more than last year.
Peachy's Pearl down to Col. Bates had nice soft bumps but also some huge areas of ice (over rock). But dropping into Thrombosis glade was so nice I went back and did this run two more times.
Overall a very nice day and lots of fun in the woods!
