Resort or Ski Area: Saddleback

Conditions: Powder / Wind blown Powder, PP

Trip Report: WHOA - it was COLD today. My friend and I planned this day off a couple of weeks ago so despite the arctic forecast, we decided to give it a go. We left coastal Maine at 6:00 AM at 25 degrees. By Farmington it was 7 degrees, and getting into Rangeley around 8:30 AM it was -7 and the wind was HOWLING. :-o I was thinking we made a mistake. But the Rangeley double was turning (Quad to the top on hold) when we get to the hill so we buy our $25 Men's day ticket and figure if we get a few runs would be worth the trip.

We skied to the LAST CHAIR. We had a blast! The skiing was excellent and as long as you covered every square inch of skin and stayed off the wide windy groomers... freshies was to be had all over the place. The glades were MINT. They got 2 inches overnight and made them ski silky smooth. It helped we were scoring first tracks all over the place.

The Glade run of the day (and all the glades were excellent) was the Intimidator glade from the NW Pass. I had not skied it from this high before and it was tight and very fun. The trail of the day was both Golden Smelt and Parmachenee Bell. Both of these narrow and winding trails had great wind blown powder. We were skiing 4-6 inches fresh in some places. All the trails on the left side had great wind blow powder to play in.

It was my friends first trip to Saddleback and first time into the trees in a serious way. He loved them both! There were about 30 cars max in the lot. A cold, but true gem of a day. I could go on but I will let the pics finish this report up.

Can you say First Tracks on Lower Nightmare

NW Pass traverse. A good 3-4 feet natural base in here.

Nightmare Glade from the Northwest Pass. I fell on a 1 foot drift had to dig out my ski.

too bad you couldn't have hit those glades further up. They would have been completely untouched! Great Report!

Awesome report! Looks like you guys were well dressed for the weather. Rangeley is notorious for being a very cold place. Curious if you went down the hill into town, I know it's the opposite direction for heading back to the Maine coast.. What a view of the lake at that intersection. Realize it's midweek, many snowmobiliers around? The bread and butter of the Rangeley winter economy.

It could have been worse cold tempswise if you went today, low of -21F in the morning, high of -8, -26F with wind chill.

We didn't head into town. Went straight home. I did see a couple of trucks pulling snow machine trailers. We did seem to get the warmer temp day of the week... if you can call that warmer!

Yeah - we were a bit sad we couldn't get higher. But ski patrol said it was 60mph wind gusts and -15 below air temp. Next time! The intimidator glade is still a fairly long run from the NW Pass. Worth the trek.

The old Kennebago T-bar would probably have been running and a T-bar keeps you warm and out of the wind.

Progress is not always a good thing.;-)

No kidding. I am debating a run up there Sunday. But I am also considering hedging. That is one helluva long drive for not much terrain if that "new and improved" summit lift is not running. Gah. "Progress" was needed in this case but I wish they could have left the T-Bar in for back up duty.
