Did you ever feel the history of a run or trail while your skiing it?

I know that i constantly think about it at Tucks.. Where extreme skiing began.. Where Toni Matt nonstopped the headwall..... Knowing people have died and knowing exactly where they passed...

Definitely at Stowe..I think of Charlie Lord when I ski Lord...and when skiing my favorite woods shots I remember my UVM days from 1997-2001 when I was a Stowe regular.

Last time I skied Stowe... There was a single chair and they gave out blankets for the ride(81ish)...

I guess it's time to go back... :)

I'll be back in either March, April..or both..definitely my favorite place in the east and you can rack up mad steezy vert off the forerunner quad and the gangola..you might even see Jake Burton..I rode the lift with him a few years back. Just me and Jake for 7 minutes..and he wondered why I didn't snowboard..doh

It was a sad day that they went from plain blankets to blankets with the Coca-Cola logo on them.

Yeah, I especially like going back to a mountain I haven't skied in maybe ten years and getting on a trail and all of a sudden recognizing that I was standing exactly were I was 10 years ago just from the terrain. That's happened to me a bunch of times. All I knew before I went up that day was I skied mountain X 15 years ago and didn't even remember what trails I skied or anything about it, then I make a few turns 1/2 way through the day and know I skied that little chute before.

The skiers change but (hopefully) the mountain never does.

"Just say no" to re-cutting classic ski trails.

And when on top of an awesome hunk of rock like Stowe, I get the feeling that I was there before I was born, before snow fell from the sky, melted and filled the streams, rivers, and oceans, before time itself began .... because I was:)

Belleayre is an old time place. I like the fact that it still has that feel to it.............that is until they turn it into a mega resort.

I feel a sense of history at Whiteface, especially with the signs around on the mountain showing where events in past Olympic games began and end. What I'm not remembering is of the signs were just for the '80 Olympics or also the '36 (?) games.

Sun Valley, ID, is another place that is definitely "Old School" as far as it's feel. Lots of reminders in the lodge that it is one of the first ski areas in the States.

The other Olympic games held in Lake Placid were from 1932...and I don't think they included downhill skiing..

I feel a sense of history every time I look in the mirror. I feel a sense of ski history when I put on my 20-year old boots. I miss the blankets.

Only personal history, which is especially true if I re-visit an area after not skiing there in several years. I'm sure when I go to Waterville this winter, I'll think of skiing there with my mom and dad nearly 25 years ago.

As for things like Charlie Lord at Stowe or some of the other old time runs in New England? Hardly at all because for the most part they've all been re-cut and aren't the same trails anymore that were skied many moons ago.

I can see your sense of history at Tucks though dmc.

It really is insane..

modern skiing was borne there... Out with the Austrian style and in with a new style that can get you down the steep gullies...

It was a sad day that they went from plain blankets to blankets with the Coca-Cola logo on them.

I remember the blankets, circa 81-82. They were heavy wool, they looked like army blankets. Didn't do too much to keep you warm, the ride was slow and cold even with the blankets. Of course our clothing sucked back then too.
