I just completed a dream season culminating with a photo in Ski Racing Magazine (note: in the background you'll see ski legend Phil Mahre autographing a racer's bib and current US Team member Kaylin Richardson looking on). My goal all year had been to make the podium in both skiing and boarding at the NASTAR Nationals and things worked out better than I had hoped.

What goals/accomplishments made this season special for you? As the snows melt away, share the things that made this season one to remember.

My Jackson Hole trip..it was supposed to be 8 days but it ended up being 10 days due to a blizzard which "forced" me to stay two addditional days..at least 5 powder days on my trip..and fun skiing with my buddy Tom at Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee..and now Tom is a proud father..

New Years eve Torch Parade at Jiminy Peak. Not the greatest, but it was a ton of fun.

iv always wanted to do one of those,

for me it was just ski as much as i could , and get to some new areas, both of which i did

-Crested Butte free ski was off the hook this year. 100 inches of snow in one week with free skiing seduced me into getting a room.

-last week at Loveland was memorable

-This is not meant to offend but crossing over the Mass. state line with two cats and a bunch of stuff was liberating. I vow to never set foot in that state again, I'll fly into Manchester. I've met a ton of very cool people from mass. but the place (mostly inside 495) just pisses me off on so many different levels.

Yesterday with Riverc0il in Tuckerman. Bluebird skies, warm temps, no wind, great coverage, blood blisters, cramps, perfect weather.

No radical routes, nothing extreme. Just a nice day on the rockpile and skied all the way to Pinkham. Good snow, good terrain, good weather, good company. What more can you ask for?

Youth!

Congratulations .. nice to see I am the younger snowboarder for once.
Thanks, Jerry. There was a typo in that caption. I won't be 62 until October.

I began that week by maintaining an online blog/diary little knowing how things would come out. How many of you are NASTAR racers? Plan on joining me at the Nationals in 2009!

board stance

Oh yeah your right .. being just 61 doesn't make you seem nearly as old now  I got 3 1/2 years to go before I am 61.

Do you use a race set up on the snowboard ...hard boots and a carving board? I have tried turning my stance angles more forward but it just seems unnatural to me as I used to be being ducked out. I do seem to run better.. well in my own mind .. when I imagine I going through gates downhill.

I'm eligible for Social Security in six months - Yikes!

Yep. Most of the time I'm on a Volkl RennTiger GS board (shown below along with my Elan SLX skis). The guy in red is Franzi Fuchsberger, six time National Powder 8 champ and Masters Downhill Champ. Bottom shot is the same board at the finish line at Steamboat.

.

The nice folks at the Long Trail Brewery gave me a freestyle board after I won my second national title a few years ago. Note: the bindings are set duck on it because I find it easier to demonstrate on when I'm teaching riders to ride switch.

Riding an alpine board takes some getting used to but it's worth the effort. Not even my slalom skis can match its carving power.

Angles

What are your stance angles when your ducked out? Mine is +18 front -12 back...

Haven't a clue - I just set 'em for what looked right that day. They've since been reset to about 20/20. Note the lifters. I have big feet and get boot-out when carving without them. Also, at my age I use step-ins.

Ever seen a pair of Long Trail skis? Probably not because these are one of a kind (should that be two of a kind?). I covered the topsheets of an old pair of Heads with bumper stickers.

Back to season highlights... On most weekends this past winter I set one of Okemo's dual NASTAR courses with snowboard-specific gates and some serious snowboard racers came to run the course. I got some excellent coaching from them. I'll be running the NASTAR operation there again next year and will set a snowboard course each day. BTW, ski racers enjoy running the triangular panels because that don't whack the gates like they do with traditional ones.

What was that song? "I won't grow up! I won't grow up!" Good thing we're getting younger....:dunce:

High point of the previous season was a trip to Davos. Check out a short video.

If I had to pick just 1 it would be a day I had at Black Mountain. There was a solid foot of fresh, the place was empty and I was skiing well. Even had the stones to do a few drops of which I hadn't done anything similar since 2000-2001

My season high point was watching my son become one of the top B mogul skiers in the Northeast. I'm his biggest fan... ;-)
