Shawnee Peak 1-6-08
Condtions PP, plus nearly fluffy early to wet, snowball-making snow in the afternoon
This was my first visit to the mountain. I didn't have too many preconceptions and had some discount passes, so off we went. Yesterday was very nice at Ragged, especially in the woods. I was ready for another day of that.
The temps today were clearly rising above yesterday's and that changed the condition of the snow from powdery to somewhat pastey during the day. The powder is done till the next storm.
As far as the mountain goes, I enjoyed it. It feels similar to Sunapee in ways but seems to have more ungroomed and tree runs. Nothing is overly steep but the mountain seems far from boring.
I can't give you a play-by-play as others do as I was in charge, or so it seemed, of my 15 yr old son and his two friends. One kid is a great runner and strong skier but has no form. He has no poles either. Eventually he found a stray one in the woods and adopted it (not under the lift line). The other kid is a strong snowboarder who will follow you any tree or bump run. The dynamics of the three is somewhere between Beavis and Butthead and Napoleon Dynamite. We stayed mostly in the woods runs and on whatever bumps we could find (which weren't huge but could be found in "stashes"). So rather than just give you pics, I think you can get an idea of the day in my little vid:
.
Conclusion about the area: nice tradtional, medium-size mountain with diverse family skiing and a great vibe. I'd go back.
