Date(s) Skied: March 3, 2007
Resort or Ski Area: Shawnee Peak
Conditions: Light PP Morning, Heavy PP Afternoon
Trip Report: We were headed for a Saddleback weekend but the younger son got sick :-/, so we cancelled the hotel room and off to Shawnee today with the older son. Hopefully Mom and the sick one can join us tomorrow at Sunday River.
GREAT conditions to start off. Got first runs down Pine Slope and the Main. Great groomed conditions. Big easy turns and you could really carry some speed. Next we tried Upper Haggets. Big whale moguls and we got our butts kicked. Nice thing about Shawnee for intermediate skiers like us is that if you get on a trial that is over your head a bit, it ends fairly quickly.
On all my trips to Shawnee this year we have never skied the east side. East side was pretty much left alone after the storm. The powder hounds probably loved it. We did OK - but we need to work on our powder technique. It was fun to explore new trials over there.
Skiing was great and we broke for lunch at 11. Then it really warmed up. Mid 40's and the snow became very heavy and started to bump up. We did fine the rest of the day but we missed the easy runs from the AM.
Hats of to Shawnee for starting the afternoon groom earlier than usual. We were able to enjoy so first runs again down a couple of newly groomed trails. They run a nice operation there. They have lots of snow - all the trails have excellent coverage.
