ski boots

HELP! Last time I was skiing was about 10 years ago. After 7 miserable days - I changed my ski rental gear for the last 2 days of skiing. Heavan. Had a great time from then on.

Problem is: This year I've decided to buy my boots. I've been to Peter Glenn, Snow & Ski and REI. I've tried on Technica, Nordica, Salomon boots. EVERY ONE gives me a miserable hot spot on the top of my foot. I do have really high arches - and for that reason I can't every buy slip on shoes - no loafers for me -

Any suggestions on a boot that will accomodate a high arch on a wide foot? What about soft boots? Any experience?

Custom boots from Surefoot or Daleboot is the way to go. I've had both and it is worth it.

Go to the foot doctor, Riechelson's, in Plymouth, NH. Call for an appointment. They will measure your feet and print out a list of boots which will fit your feet based upon your skiing ability. You might have to have custom orthics made. Works like a charm and makes for comfortable skiing. I had to order a Lange boot that the ski shop didn't carry but they worked out well for me. You can order boots from them or your own ski shop and then bring them back for custom fitting. If you're going to ski, it's well worth being comfortable considering how much money you spend to ski. I highly recommend this process.

The 2005-2006 Ski Magazine Annual Gear issue has a pretty good article on boot fitting as well as a number of boots reviewed based on type of skiing...

I am a believer in having a professional boot-fitter measure your foot-ankle-lower calf and using their manufacturers specifications to size & select boots for you based on your honest skiing ability...

Regarding information for boot fitting I recommend two books:

The Athletic Skier, written by Warren Witherell & David Evarard, is available in numerous book stores and on-line for about $15-$20.00, they have written and diagramed 45 or so pages of how ski boots should fit…

The All Mountain skier, written by R. Mark Elling is available in numerous books stores as well as on-line for about $15-$20.00, he has dedicated about 14 pages on boot fitting as well.

It is very difficult to ski to your best ability if the most important connection part "The Foot-in-the-Boot" is incorrect…

I have a high arch as well, same deal I can not wear loafers. Nordica & Salomon boots usually work well for people with our problem. The custom fitting as has been suggested to you already is a great idea.

I personally won't have a boot worked on until I've skied them at least 10 times, since most boot liners will pack out to some degree. You can always have a boot tech make them bigger in your hot spots, but smaller is a different matter.

wow, charlie! you nearly went all the way back to the beginning of the current version of this forum to find that post

I find it interesting that the early forum topics aren't much different than today's topics, so if the string is relevant and doesn't contain have too many posts, why not freshen it up? :D

I find it interesting to research and compare...kind of like how Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mays & Arron didn't need steroids to succeed in professional baseball...why do today's athletes?

I was wondering if this title would pop up. Great book.

There are master boot techs sacttered around the area. I know there are some links to them referenced in the All Mountain Skier appendix...and probably in Ski Mag's gear review.

Lots of solutions, just need to find one that fits in your wallet.

I mentioned "America's Best Bootfitters" www.bootfitters.com in previous posts and believe that they do a great job...as mentioned above they advertise in the magazines...

The technicians just don't fit boots, they assist you with developing a sensible boot-binding-ski package to fit your individual skii & budget needs...

After a few years of this and other forums (and some USENET before that), the same topics do resurface, some times with the same players, sometimes not.

For me, narrow feet, high arches, twigs for ankles: Lange world cup low volume with orthotics. (Just replaced my L10's two days before I hung everything up in June.)
