Anyone read "how to ski ICE" in the latest issue of ski? Are they kidding? They consider that ice?? Obviously it wasnt shot at KMART in Feburary..C'mon SKI, if you are doing an ICE segment, then lets see some of the blue stuff!!

as always, i'll pipe in with my usual comment about ice. true ice is not skiable. what most people consider ice is really scraped down hard pack. it is pretty nasty stuff indeed, but not ice. generally, the conditions most people consider "ice" and can't deal with is the same type of snow most racers can carve right through. but not even racers stand a chance against ice.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again- I can handle ice, but only in a glass, with gin and tonic.

I haven't received my copy of the magazine yet, but from the comments here, I'm going to guess that this feature was written by a "westerner." No one can ski true "ice," the glistening, clear or blue kind. Scraping over "hard-pack" (so called "packed powder" at some of our eastern resorts) is another story. I take care of my own edges, but do not get totally obsessesed with having super sharp edges. I like my skis to last a while, and constant machine/stone grinding wears them out too fast for me. My basic technique is to simply pass over the icy spot or area and set myself up to turn at the first opportunity. I once was laughed at by a ski instructor at Vail, because he said that my stance was rather "rigid" and that I looked like I was "ready for anything at all times." It seems that he had never skied in the east. I was urgently cautioned by a couple on a lift at Alta one year to "watch out for the ice" on a trail off that lift. It was my turn to laugh when I found it. Who among us hasn't unexpectedly slipped 5 to 10 feet sideways in the middle of an arc while hurtling down a trail. That kind of thing makes the average western skier pale with anxiety. Of course, they can be amused by the average eastern skier floundering in anything over 4" of fluff! I guess it is all a matter of what you are used to, or what you have had the opportunity to learn. I am fortunate in that I have had those opportunities and enjoy skiing on/in anything from "packed powder" to "waist deep face shots!"

I'll take mine with Jack and Coke but either way the results are generally the same as if I ski on the stuff-
