I saw in the paper a couple of weeks ago that ski sundown is trying to buy powder ridge, I think this is a great idea sundown runs a great operation and their know how and marketing could hel powder ridge survive. Poder ridge is central ct within 30 miles of well over 300,000 people, it has 500 vertical. It also is within 15 minute of a highway probabaly less now that the route 66 expansion is getting completed oh and it is right nex too a college wesylan in middletown. If they make snow and groom well people will come I cannot imagine it failing if properly run. Yawggooo and mt southington do ok why not the ridge when I was younger I am pretty sure it was mobbed here is to the future.

Do you recall what paper you saw that story? I'd love to find that story.

I made my first tracks at Powder Ridge, would love to see it rescued.

It would be nice to see the Ridge revitalized. I just hope it's not at the expense of Sundown's resources...

Probably saw you there, I was in JrHS and HS in the eighties as well...

Same here, ironically, we had season passes there last year as well.

it was so convenient, almost like a place to hang out. they used to have some crazy deals too, like staying open till 3:00 in the morning.

Yes I also learned to ski at Power ridge in 1980 when I was a senior in high school. The hill was only 30 minutes from my house so I made it there often. They had a lift ticket that was good from 10:30pm until 3:00am on Friday and Saturday nights. You could also go 5:00pm until 10:30pm or even 5:00pm until 3:00am . They also had a Sunday night special from 5:00 until 10:30 for something like $6.00. Many high school and college age kids skied those night hours. Sure beat the Keg parties that were the weekly entertainment back then. Many good memories.

I believe there is a town vote coming up soon that will allow the deal to go through or not. I think if anyone could turn Powder Ridge around it's Bob, he seems to know what he's doing with Sundown...

Here's the latest story I could find:

And a couple older articles:

nice find brian. the sundown owner DOES know how to make snow and it shows. but i agree with greg, i would hate to see sundown suffer in any way shape or form due to funds being dumped into powder ridge. Sundown isnt exactly hair raising, but its terrain is far superior to powder ridges'. No amount of snow or lift upgrades or grooming can change that.

I agree, but I really doubt that he would wreck Sundown in favor of Powder Ridge. That just wouldn't make any sense to me.

I thought someone bought Powder ridge and was turning all that land into houses last year??

AFAIK the current owner threatened to do that, but it didn't happen. Or at least it hasn't happened yet, the town is trying to prevent that from happening...

Thanks for the story links, guys.

I agree that Sundown is a better area, but the Ridge was always fun in its own way. My school took ski trips there and first you got to ski into the night, then ride home on a bus and nip from a half-pint or make out in the back.

I've always been a bit suprised that the folks over the ridge from the Ridge at Lyman Orchards haven't gotten involved in this. You'd think that with the large recreation draw they already bring to that area between their 2 golf courses, the farm stand, pick your own, corn maze, etc that having Powder Ridge up and running as atleast as a 2 season resort would be a natural progression for them.
